LONGTIME CIVIC LEADER REMEMBERED : MASSARI KNOWN AS `MR. PALMDALE'.Byline: Karen Maeshiro Daily News Staff Writer Former Mayor Domenic Massari, who helped create the Palmdale Chamber of Commerce in 1933 and the city government in 1962, was remembered Tuesday by friends as a civic leader who was a true gentleman and beloved by everyone. Known in the community as ``Mr. Palmdale,'' Massari died Sunday at age 102 at his home in the Palmdale mobile-home park he built when he was 75. ``He was the type of man that everyone loved. He was just that type of person,'' said businessman Roger Persons, who knew Massari for more than 30 years. ``He was really interested in the community as a whole and did a lot for the community. Persons said he never heard Massari utter a swear word. ``He was a gentleman from the word go,'' Persons said. Born to a poor Italian family, Massari worked hard to become a successful businessman. He came to Palmdale in 1929, when it was a dusty farm town, and became an operator of service stations and an oil distributorship between Saugus and Mojave, among other business enterprises. Massari helped charter the Palmdale Chamber of Commerce in 1933, raised money for St. Mary's Catholic Church, and served as Kiwanis Club president and a 10-year volunteer fireman. He spearheaded the successful 1962 city incorporation campaign, after two failed attempts, and spent 10 years on the City Council, as mayor in 1968-69. In 1968, at age 75, he designed and built a mobile-home park, where he resided with his wife.
