MARRIED 50 YEARS: IRENE AND HEINZ MUELLER

Irene and Heinz Mueller of Glendale celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family on Dec. 4 at Castaways Restaurant in Burbank. They were married on Nov. 26, 1955, in Heilbronn, Germany.

They met at a dance hall when they were in their teens, got engaged on Oct. 15, 1955, and were married the following month.

Heinz graduated from a business college in Heilbronn. He was the owner of R.B. Phillips Inc., which does interior work for casinos.

Irene graduated in 1953 and worked as a secretary and was president of a women's golf club, among many activities.

Their hobbies include golf, travel and dance. They also belong to a Swabian club. Swabia is a region in Germany close to the border of Switzerland.

They have three children: Roger Mueller, Martin Mueller and Monica Halasynski. They also have 13 grandchildren.

MARRIED 50 YEARS: JOHN AND JANE ARNOLD

John and Jane Arnold of Woodland Hills celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends with a party on Dec. 17 at Canoga Park Women's Club. They were married on Dec. 17, 1955, in Floral Park, N.J.

Jane and John both grew up in Long Island, N.Y. After marrying, they lived in Huntsville, Ala., and moved to Southern California in 1957. They lived in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

After having children, Jane went back to school and earned a music degree from California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , in 1978. She worked for the LAUSD as a gerontology specialist, teaching music and exercise for the elderly. She also was president of Daughters of the King, an order for women in the Episcopal Church and the Canoga Park Women's Club. She was also a dancer with the American Ballet Theater.

John graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering degree. He earned his master's degree from the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  in 1972. He worked as an aerospace engineer for several companies, including Hughes Aircraft.

Their favorite hobbies include dancing and golf.

They have three children: John Arnold Jr. of Pittstown, N.J.; Candace Saunders of Santa Clarita; and Virginia Krueger of San Diego. They also have 14 grandchildren.

MARRIED 55 YEARS: PHILIP AND MIRIAM SKARIN

Philip and Miriam Skarin of Van Nuys celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with family and friends on Nov. 18 at the 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant in Van Nuys. They met through Philip's sister Joy when she brought Miriam to their house in an attempt to play matchmaker. It worked.

Philip was born on April 24, 1924, in Los Angeles. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey.  in 1942 and went on to Los Angeles City College Los Angeles City College, known as LACC, is a public community college in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles, California. Their favorite hobbies include hiking and weight lifting; Philip was a six-time world champion in masters weightlifting. Competition has taken them to many places around the world, including Scotland, Greece, Australia and New Zealand.

They have four children: Ronald Skarin of Chatsworth, Kenneth Skarin of Northridge, Carol Williams of Philomath, Ore., and Barbara Hunt of Sierra Madre. They also have eight grandchildren.
