They also celebrated the event with a four-day cruise to San Diego, Catalina and Ensenada on May 9 with their son, Bill, and his family. The couple met at the Hollywood Roller Bowl in 1944, when John served as a medic medic: see alfalfa. in the Navy. John participated in nine different invasions in the South Pacific. Upon his return, the couple were married on July 5, 1945, at the Fountain Avenue Baptist Church in Hollywood, spending their Honeymoon at Big Bear Lake. John was born in Chicago but grew up in Sarasota, Fla. He came to Southern California after joining the Navy and graduated from North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey. at age 17 in 1942. After leaving the Navy, he worked as an accountant for Golden State Dairy in Pomona. After moving to Van Nuys, he worked as an LAFD LAFD Los Angeles Fire Department LAFD Los Alamos Fire Department LAFD London Association of Funeral Directors (UK) firefighter/paramedic for 28 years and retired in 1980 as a captain. His hobbies include oil painting, genealogy and reading. He also ran in and completed three senior marathons and currently bowls in a senior league. They have two children: Bill of Simi Valley and Susan Carden of Mesa, Ariz. They also have three grandchildren. MARRIED 50 YEARS: JOHN P. AND ANN TOOLE John P. and Ann Toole of Woodland Hills celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a renewal of their vows on July 24 at St. Mel's Catholic Church. They met at a Christmas Party on December 24, 1953. John calls it ``the luckiest day of my life.'' At age 6, during World War II, John was evacuated from Liverpool, England, to County Kerry, Ireland. John and his family lived on his mother's farm for four years. When Ann was 4, her family also was evacuated from Liverpool to Wales Wales, Welsh Cymru, western peninsula and political division (principality) of Great Britain (1991 pop. 2,798,200), 8,016 sq mi (20,761 sq km), west of England; politically united with England since 1536. The capital is Cardiff. , where they lived on a farm high up in the hills of the Welsh mountains. They were married July 23, 1955. After two years of marriage, John and Ann emigrated to Montreal. After a year, they decided that long Montreal winters were not their cup of tea, so they moved to California in 1958. In 1960, they became U.S. citizens. In 1978, after John retired early from the Department of Building and Safety, they began a successful construction company specializing in soil and geological restoration, focusing on earthquake safety. John oversaw the organization and ran company projects while Ann managed internal operations and finances. They have three children: Sandra Toole of Big Bear, and Carol and Derrick Toole, both of Simi Valley. They also have six grandchildren.
