In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts. will catch a longer break, literally. The school board this past week approved a change to the 2004-2005 and 2006-2007 school calendar years, allowing students to return from their summer break after Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894. . It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by , Moorpark, Las Virgenes and Oak Park school districts in hopes of designing a calendar that meets all their needs. Several factors also contributed to the school district's decision. ``I've been approached by parents, teachers and classified employees with regards to why we start before Labor Day,'' said board member Janice DiFatta. ``Families take that weekend, and then of course we see that we don't have all of our students back and that causes problems with setting up classrooms and getting started with the year.'' Officials say attendance is also affected by the start date. Overall, numbers are significantly better after Labor Day. One issue of concern is that the altered calendar year would overlap standardized testing A standardized test is a test administered and scored in a standard manner. The tests are designed in such a way that the "questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent" [1] with Advancement Placement testing at the high school level. The new calendar will be put into place for the next two years and board members will make a determination following that period. ``The testing can be worked out,'' said board member Greg Stratton. ``We need to provide these opportunities and figure out a way to solve the problem.'' Trustees this week also eliminated school-of-choice options at Atherwood Elementary, Big Springs Elementary, Katherine Elementary, Township township: see town. Elementary and White Oak Elementary, effective in September. The move eliminating intra-school transfers is in response to several development projects in town, which project an increase from the current years of about 600 students for the 2004-2005 school year. |
