LONG-RUNNING TOURNAMENT IS 106 YEARS OLD: SCGA AMATEUR HAS LOCAL FLAVOR MORE THAN A DOZEN LOCAL GOLFERS AMONG 91 IN CONTENTION.

``It's got a lot of quality,'' said Mike Peck, assistant editor of the North Hollywood-based SCGA's Fore Magazine and longtime observer of area amateur golf. ``Fourteen guys in a field of less than 100 is a lot. And when you're talking about Hogarth and Steinberg, they are always a threat. Those are guys who can put up a good score and will be respectable in any field of amateur golf at this level.''

Hogarth, who won the U.S. Public Links championship in 1996 and the State Amateur title in 1999, won last year's SCGA SCGA Southern California Golf Association

Steinberg has won four SCGA Amateur titles - in 1988, 1991, 1992 and 1997 - and won the SCGA Mid-Amateur (age 25 and over) in 1996 and 2001.

They'll be playing on a 15-year-old course that has yet to yield a score under 65 and a field including some of the top players in Southern California amateur golf.

Past SCGA Amateur champions John Pate (1999) and Scott McGihon (2000) will compete, as will 1998 State Amateur champion Ed Cuff and reigning State Amateur champion Don DuBois, who won at Pebble Beach last month and is bidding for a rare SCGA-State Amateur double in the same year.

Hogarth, who has competed in several United States Golf Association The United States Golf Association (USGA) is the United States' national association of golf courses, clubs and facilities and the governing body of golf for the U.S. and Mexico. Other area entries at Tijeras Creek include recent Highland High of Palmdale graduate Jarvey, whose 3- under-par 69 on his home course, Antelope Valley Country Club, was the lowest score by any area SCGA finalist at a qualifying tournament.

Uptgraft, a Cal State Northridge product and 2004 U.S. Amateur finalist (2-under-par 69 for medalist honors at Robinson Ranch of Santa Clarita), current CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  players Miller and Nat and recent Royal High of Simi Valley graduate Hoffenberg (all 1-under-par 70) had the area's other top qualifying scores.

Beck finished first alternate in a qualifier at SCGA Golf Club in Murrieta but got into the championship field when Pepperdine freshman Colin Wilcox - a two-time Daily News Player of the Year at Camarillo High - withdrew to play in the Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Golf Club near Seattle.

Former Simi Valley High golfer Modglin, who won a tournament for Fresno State this year, and ex-Valencia High star Edick, the 2001 Daily News Player of the Year, who was All-Big West Conference for UC Irvine this year, joined Beck as alternates called up to the SCGA field.
