LONG RELAY RUN HONORS COUNTY'S FALLEN OFFICERS.

 are being honored in the 27th annual Sheriff's Peace Officers Memorial Torch Relay Run across Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County.

Begun Friday morning at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's headquarters in Monterey Park, the run was expected to reach Acton today around midnight, the Lancaster sheriff's station at 3:30 a.m. Sunday and the Palmdale sheriff's station at 5 a.m.

The torch was taken up at the relay's start by Lancaster Deputy Greg Kelly, a friend of Sorensen, who was shot to death last August while investigating a routine trespassing case outside Lake Los Angeles.

Patrol cars will accompany the torchbearers as the relay visits every Los Angeles County sheriff's station, except for the one on Catalina Island.

After passing Sunday morning over the San Gabriel Mountains San Gabriel Mountains, S Calif., E and NE of Los Angeles, running c.50 mi (80 km) westward from Cajon Pass. San Antonio Peak (10,080 ft/3,072 m) is the highest of the range. Citrus fruits are raised on the southern foothills.  along Angeles Forest Highway The Angeles Forest Highway traverses the Angeles National Forest and connects the Los Angeles basin to the Antelope Valley by going up and over the San Gabriel Mountains. The highway is variously known as County Road N-3 or FH-59 or the Palmdale cutoff. It is about 25 miles long. , the relay is scheduled to end at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Altadena sheriff's station.

Tim Stehr became the Police Chief of the department on August 1, 2007. The previous chiefs were Thomas Hoefel, David Newsham and Glen Bell.

Longfellow died in 1923 and his name was added to the memorial due to a review of his case. The others died between June 2003 and last month.
