LOMA To Host Presentation on ``Patent Trolls in the Insurance Industry'' at the Upcoming LOMA Financial Inforum 2006.

Senior executives in the insurance industry are becoming increasingly concerned about their exposure to patent trolls. This concern is highlighted by the recent $600 million dollar settlement (in the field of telecommunications) that Research in Motion, makers of BlackBerry(TM) mobile email devices, had to pay to patent holding company NTP, to avoid having the courts shut down the Blackberry email system.

CEOs and presidents; CFOs, treasurers, controllers and investment officers; as well as senior strategic planning, marketing and operations officers who attend the session will be able to understand what can and cannot be patented in the insurance field, the true nature of the patent troll threat they are facing, and the proactive steps they can take to preserve their freedom to operate. The talk will be presented by Mark Nowotarski, president of Markets, Patents & Alliances LLC, an intellectual property consulting firm specializing in business method patents. Mr. Nowotarski is a registered US patent agent and an inventor on 17 patents.

The coauthor of the paper is Tom Bakos, FSA MAAA. Tom is the principle of Tom Bakos Consulting Inc, an actuarial consulting firm specializing in designing patentable insurance products. Tom is a coinventor on several pending patent applications in the insurance field.
