LOGITECH ANNOUNCES VIRTUAL PAGE SCANNING 'AutoStitch' Feature Intelligently and Automatically Merges Multiple
Scans; Gives Virtual Page Capability in Hand-Held Scanners
FREMONT, Calif., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Logitech Inc., international market leader in imaging solutions and pointing devices for personal computers, today announced "Virtual Page Scanning" capability in a software upgrade for the ScanMan(R) Model 256 hand- held scanner. A new software kernel containing an "AutoStitch" feature allows users to automatically merge up to four scans, with no need for the manual interaction that characterizes today's graphics merging technology. The feature intelligently adjusts numerous image attributes to accomplish seamless, transparent images. In addition, Logitech's image editing software for ScanMan Model 256, currently known as Ansel(TM), is being upgraded with several additional features to a new version called FotoTouch(TM).
FotoTouch can access Logitech's ScanMan software, which contains the AutoStitch feature as a DLL (Dynamic Library Link) within Windows 3.0 and above. The FotoTouch software upgrade with AutoStitch will ship with ScanMan Model 256 in January 1992. There will be no change in the suggested retail price of the package. The FotoTouch software upgrade will also be available to current registered users of ScanMan Model 256 for $49 and to owners of older Logitech scanners for $79.
"With Auto Stitch, we've gone beyond 'bridging the gap' between hand-held and desktop scanners," said Logitech product marketing manager, David Almoslino. "Now, users can capture images significantly wider than the 8.5-by-11 inch limit of desktop units, with minimal effort, equal image quality, and significantly lower cost. Our products are defining a new product category -- Virtual Page Scanners. Yet, even with this powerful new capability, they remain very personal peripherals for the individual user, in keeping with Logitech's commitment to 'humanizing' the computer."
FotoTouch image editing software is compatible with any IBM PC or compatible running Microsoft Windows(TM) 3.0 or higher. The ScanMan Model 256/FotoTouch combination requires at least one megabyte of RAM and a hard disk. Supported file formats include TIFF (compressed, uncompressed, and CCITT), PCX, BMP, and EPS (OUTPUT ONLY). In addition to its new AutoStitch capability, the FotoTouch upgrade contains an audible scanning speed warning (currently, excessive scanning speed is indicated by a small light on the scanner head.) An "AutoStop" feature, which senses a pause in scanner head motion, enables users to continue multiple scans without manually terminating a scan and restarting the unit. An on-screen tonality control has been added as a supplement to existing brightness and contrast controls, and printing has been improved. AutoStitch versus Manual Stitching
Today, users must perform a series of manual operations when scanned images are "stitched" together, including scanning each part, correcting the vertical skewing of each scan, and aligning the scans using the mouse and arrow keys. Slight variations in scanning speed can result in a mismatch, as can variations in ambient light. AutoStitch compensates for variations in scanning speed, shading, and other user-introduced peculiarities to yield an image equal in quality to those produced by more expensive desktop scanners. The AutoStitch process involves several steps: identification and extraction of unique features within an overlapped area; geometric transformation, including any necessary deskewing, of corresponding features to achieve uniform geometry between the two scans; calibration of gray levels across the entire image set; and merging of up to four scans. The resulting image is then automatically transferred to a supporting host application, such as FotoTouch. Additional Applications Supporting AutoStitch
Logitech recently joined forces with several leading imaging vendors, including Aldus, Caere, Hewlett Packard, and Kodak, to produce an application program interface (API) and protocol that permits the easy integration of a wide range of input peripherals with any software application needing the information captured by these devices.
More than 200 hardware and software vendors have reviewed the specification, and to date, approximately 40 have endorsed it. This means that by writing to the specification, software developers can offer direct support for a variety of image capturing peripherals within a single application, without having to create multiple drivers. As a DLL in the Windows environment, the AutoStitch feature will be available to any compliant host application that chooses the Logitech hand-held scanner to acquire a desired image. AutoStitch and Other Logitech Products
In addition to its initial release with ScanMan Model 256, AutoStitch capability will become a software feature available in Logitech's entire ScanMan family of hand-held scanners.
Logitech designs, manufactures, and markets a variety of input and pointing devices and related software applications for both IBM and Macintosh platforms.
