LOCKYER FILES BRIEF OPPOSING DEVELOPMENT OF NEWHALL RANCH.

Opponents of the 22,000-home Newhall Ranch development have found an ally in state Attorney General William Lockyer, who on Thursday filed a friend of the court brief in a Kern Kern, river, 155 mi (249 km) long, rising in the S Sierra Nevada Mts., E Calif., and flowing south, then southwest to a reservoir in the extreme southern part of the San Joaquin valley. The river has Isabella Dam as its chief facility.  County Superior Court stating his opposition to the planned mini-city.

Lockyer further asked the court for permission to testify for Ventura County, which is suing to halt the project.

``This is tremendously exciting,'' said Mary Ann Krause, field deputy for Supervisor Kathy Long. ``The interest of the state demonstrates how important the Newhall case is. The friend of the court brief is an action filed by a person or organization who is not a party to the lawsuit, but believes it has evidence or perspective that would help the court make its decision.

Long first contacted Lockyer's office regarding Newhall last March.

``(The brief) basically says the attorney general has information and standing to address issues that Ventura County cannot,'' Krause said. ``He is the designated protector protector /pro·tec·tor/ (-tek´ter) a substance in a catalyst that prolongs the rate of activity in the latter.  of both the interests of the people of California and the state's resources.''
