 received President George W. Bush's Volunteer Service Award.

The local recipients were among more than 2,800 Lockheed Martin employees nationwide who received the award during National Volunteer Week, April 23-29.

``We are exceptionally proud of our employees who give so many hours to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods,'' said Rick Baker, vice president and site general manager of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. in Palmdale. ``Through our Distinguished Community Service Awards program, we are contributing $15,000 to the nonprofit organizations Nonprofit Organization

On Saturday, some 50 Lockheed Martin employees -- led by the company's Environment, Safety and Health department -- cleaned an illegal dump site of tires, carpet, old paint cans and other garbage scattered among Joshua trees and sagebrush sagebrush, name for several species of Artemisia, deciduous shrubs of the family Asteraceae (aster family), particularly abundant in arid regions of W North America. The common sagebrush (A.  over 20 acres west of Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  near Avenue O.

Palmdale city officials identified the dump site, which is close to the normally dry Amargosa Creek and was one of the worst in Palmdale.

Waste Management of the Antelope Valley donated containers and hauled them away.

``Our collective goal is to help restore the fragile balance of the desert ecosystem and hopefully, in doing so, we will set an example for others in the community to adopt the same ideals,'' said Laura Been, Lockheed Martin Environmental Resources representative, who spearheaded the volunteer effort.

Nationwide, Lockheed Martin employees collectively logged more than 1 million volunteer hours in 2005.

Since 2002, more than 2.2 million hours have been logged by Lockheed Martin volunteers.

Employees were eligible for the presidential award if they logged more than 100 volunteer hours on the corporation's volunteer Web site for 2005.

The President's Volunteer Service Award The President's Volunteer Service Award program was established to honor volunteers that give hundreds of thousands of hours per year helping others. These volunteers can be individuals, families and organizations located throughout the United States.  is presented by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation was created by President George W.
