LOCAL WOMEN'S ROUNDUP: CSUN: BIG WEST WIN NO. 2.

Byline: Daily News

There was no need for the Cal State Northridge women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  team to suppress the smiles that couldn't help but crawl across their faces during the final minutes of their 69-59 Big West Conference victory over UC Riverside on Saturday night, no fear of jinxing the Matadors' first win in six games.

The last time Northridge (2-18, 2-7) won, on Jan. 11th against Pacific, every fan inside the Northridge gym held their breath until the final buzzer sounded before storming the court to celebrate.

But this time, the few hundred on hand cheered confidently throughout, as the Matadors weathered each rally the Highlanders staged.

``It feels great because everyone on the team can honestly say they put some part into the win,'' said Ofa Tulikihifo, who scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds after missing the last game with an injured left knee.

The Highlanders (4-15, 1-7) came to Northridge with only seven players in uniform, but two of those, Cassandra Reeves and Crystal Harris, were All-Big West picks last season. Reeves and Harris combined for 28 points, but all three Highlanders centers were out with injuries, and Northridge was able to take advantage on the inside.
