LOCAL WATCH: KANKE HITS THE STREET.

The last time MK Kanke of Frazier Park competed in the Ford L.A. Street Race, he led for 10 laps and might have had a shot at winning the NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Featherlite Southwest Series race if not for a broken motor he suffered after the first pit stop.

That was three years ago. And even though the time has changed, broken motors and damaged rear ends have plagued the Kennedy High graduate over the last two Southwest Series races.

``We've been having lots of breakage problems,'' said Kanke, driver of the Buyer's Choice Auto Warranty/4 Points Sheridan Pontiac. ``But we got to look up for the future.''

Despite the recent mechanical problems, Kanke's team has showed promise. Kanke, who is fifth in the Southwest Series standings, won the pole at Mesa Marin Raceway Mesa Marin Raceway was a high banked half mile racetrack in Bakersfield, California that was demolished following the 2005 racing season to make way for housing developments in the foothills of northeast Bakersfield.  in Bakersfield two weeks ago for a Southwest Series record-setting 23rd time.  his luck to change at this weekend's L.A. Street Race, an event on a course that appeals to Kanke's taste in driving.

``I've done well there before and I enjoy it,'' Kanke said. ``It makes more of the driver come out. I am looking forward to that.''

The L.A. Street Race is the only NASCAR event run on a temporary road course and one of only two road course events on the Southwest Series.

``Toronto's an absolutely terrific event,'' Herta said. ``Certainly, I think as far as the fans go there, they have some of the most knowledgeable fans of Champ Car racing that we see all year. And I really enjoy the street courses. I got to do Long Beach this year (for Walker Racing) and that went pretty well (fifth place). Hopefully we can recreate that at Toronto.''

Kanaan, who injured his arm and ribs during qualifying for the Grand Prix of Detroit, is expected back for the Michigan 500 on July 23.
