LOCAL TV NEWS VARIES IN COVERAGE OF MAYOR.

Byline: Peter Hartlaub Daily News Staff Writer

While Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  delivered his State of the City address Wednesday, some local television newscasts chose to air his remarks after a story about a woman who had chained herself to a tree.

Local TV news shows long have been criticized for largely ignoring the city's important events, while focusing too much on crime, sex and trivialities. And the KCAL kcal kilocalorie.

 (Channel 9) newscast at 2 p.m. didn't even cover the mayor's speech.

But television news directors defended their coverage, saying that even if it wasn't the first story, the mayor's remarks were given appropriate prominence in their newscasts.

KABC's (Channel 7) coverage of the mayor during its 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. newscasts came toward the beginning of the broadcasts, but not before the story of Indira, the woman trying to stop an old tree from being uprooted in the Hollywood Hills The Hollywood Hills, an unofficial designation of part of the City of Los Angeles, California, are part of the eastern section of the low transverse range of the Santa Monica Mountains, which extends from the Los Feliz District and Hollywood, on the south side of the Valley, to .

KABC KABC Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children  News Director Cheryl Fair pointed out that the State of the City address led the second segment of the 5 p.m. news. The piece ran 2-1/2 minutes during that broadcast, compared to a shorter segment in the morning.

``It's not like the last story has the least importance,'' Fair said. ``Each segment is almost like a mini-newscast in itself.''

(Channel 2), coverage of Riordan's speech was aired in the first few minutes of the noon newscast, although it aired after the tree feature. For the 6 p.m. news, the tree controversy was the last story of the broadcast.

KCBS Managing Editor Pat Casey Pat Casey (b. 1959 in McMinnville, Oregon) is the head coach for the Oregon State Beavers baseball team. He is best known for winning the 2006 College World Series for the Beavers' first-ever baseball National Championship.  said a reporter was on the scene to cover the State of the City speech, which the station considered very important.

``The tree lady is a story that developed late in the morning,'' he said. ``It was 19 seconds (long), and it was strictly for pacing.''

The alternative would be to run longer, more weighty pieces one after another with reporters on air, but Casey said, ``It's not going to be an easier newscast to watch.''

On KCAL, the mayor didn't merit a mention on the station's 2 p.m. newscast, but it had a feature about stress pills for dogs and advice from chef Paul Prudhomme about the proper use of cheesecloth cheese·cloth
