Hannah Chatham's drawing and artwork of winners from other congressional districts will hang for a year in Cannon Hall Cannon Hall is a country house museum located between the villages of Cawthorne and High Hoyland north of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Originally the home of the Spencer and later the Spencer-Stanhope family, it now houses collections of fine furniture, paintings, ceramics , just outside the Capitol.

Chatham, a senior, is home-schooled and takes art classes from Alicia Garver, who also produced last year's overall winner, Emily Duffy.

``This is actually my first big drawing, and my teacher really helped me through it every step of the way,'' said Chatham.

She sketched the children in white on a black mat board and then filled in the details with colored pencils. The picture is from a photograph Chatham took while on a church mission trip to Nigeria two years ago. Her picture is titled ``Nigeria: Generation of Hope.''

She is the second of eight siblings siblings npl (formal) → frères et sœurs mpl (de mêmes parents) , all home-schooled by their mother, Cindy Chatham.

``We think it's wonderful,'' the mother said. ``We think it's a great accolade to Hannah.''

The young artist created her first piece under Garver's tutelage TUTELAGE. State of guardianship; the condition of one who is subject to the control of a guardian.  - a pencil drawing pencil drawing

Garver was so impressed with the work that she moved Chatham up to colored pencils for her second piece.

``I've taken art from a lot of different teachers over the years, but recently taking with this teacher has made my art really become what it is,'' Chatham said of Garver. ``She's the one who helped me to make my art better - to work on it and make it exceptional. Before, I think I just did art because it I liked it or it was fun, ... but she really made it come out exceptional - better than anything I'd ever done before.''

Chatham has experimented with acrylics and makes collages for greeting cards See e-card.  as well as for flower pots and other household objects. She likes to draw or paint pictures of people or animals.

``It can be any picture - even if it's a landscape; you put a person in it, and it's all the more interesting,'' she said.

Chatham finds art strongly appealing. ``I think I like creating things. I like bringing my personality into a visible format where I can show people this is what this is - the talent that I have. And it also points to God. I have a talent, and all talent comes from God, and if you do something well, it points to an exceptional God.''

She hopes to attend art school after graduation in June - either in Pasadena or San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden .

, she's got great things ahead of her,'' her mother said.

``You can do anything you want to do; you really can,'' said the daughter. ``If you have the desire to do it and you have an encourager, you can do anything you want.''

On June 14, she and other winners in the congressional art contest will attend a reception at U.S. Rep. Bill Thomas' offices in Washington, D.C. Thomas already held a reception at his Bakersfield office for district entrants in the competition and their parents.
