LOCAL STUDENT WINS FLIGHT SCHOLARSHIP FROM POST OFFICE.

Byline: Donna Huffaker Daily News Staff Writer

Andrew Burghdorf was as earnest about accepting his scholarship to the Black Pilots of America Flight School as he was in explaining why he wants to learn to fly.

Standing wide-eyed before the Tuskegee airman who helped select him from nearly 100 students, Burghdorf, 17, said he'd like to use his pilot's license to some day fly into remote regions of Africa The continent of Africa can be conceptually subdivided into a number of regions or subregions. ``No matter what I do, I want to help those who are less fortunate,'' Andrew wrote in his winning essay and repeated on Friday.

Glendale was the duo's westernmost stop.

The pilots flew ``The Spirit of Atlantic City'' from Atlantic City on July 17, 1933, to Glendale, completing their flight on July 28. Both aviators were fascinated with flying, but had to overcome discrimination before they were able to fly.

The post office sponsored a recreation of the flight to honor both pilots last November.

Race was not part of the scholarship selection process, said Tuskegee airman Edward Brantley. It mattered not that Andrew is white, he said. ``His aims are so meaningful.''

``He has Africa in his blood,'' a tearful Paul Burghdorf said at a reception at the Glendale branch post office. ``It's obviously something he feels deeply about.''

The post office will pay for the boy's $1,370 tuition and room and board. Continental airlines will pay the fare to and from Miami, said spokeswoman Terri Bouffiou.
