LOCAL RESIDENTS MOURN AND LOOK TOWARD TOMORROW.

Byline: Candice Choi Staff Writer

Three years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the victims and fallen heroes of that day were saluted Saturday in a series of quiet tributes commemorating the tragedy.

Though smaller in scale, the tone and tenor of many of the tributes were wrought with the same roiling emotions that marked the first anniversary of the attacks.

``I looked at the community events taking place across the country and I'm struck by the commitment to never forget,'' Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Fire Chief William R. Bamattre said the recent on-duty death of firefighter Jaime Foster symbolized the sense of self-sacrifice that drove the more than 340 firefighters to rush into the burning World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

A memorial resembling the Twin Towers and bearing the names of the Sept. 11 victims was donated to the Fire Department at the ceremony.

``The images of that day are forever etched in our minds,'' Mayor James Hahn said as he stood in front of a giant American flag mounted between the ladders of two firetrucks at the Elysian Park ceremony.

The city's tributes began in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. ``The shock has worn off, but the gravity is still here,'' said Pat O'Brien, commander of the American Legion Post 377.

The small gathering was in stark contrast to the 700 firefighters, police officers and community members who turned out in the same park on the first anniversary of the attacks.

State Sen. Richard Alarcon, D-Van Nuys, told the intimate gathering that the refurbished memorial would serve as a reminder of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in New York City New York City: see New York, city.
