LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES ANGLE FOR COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS.Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer PALMDALE - The Antelope Valley's two congressional representatives are angling for powerful committee assignments. Bill Archer, R-Texas, as the chairman of the House Ways and Means WAYS AND MEANS. The entire House of Representatives will vote on the steering committee's recommendations in early January. McKeon is endorsed for the Appropriations Committee slot by the California Republican delegation. However, McKeon aide David Foy said it would not be appropriate to speculate on how much weight that endorsement will have with the House Republican steering committee. If he is selected to the Appropriations Committee, McKeon, under House rules, would have to give up his seats on all three of the other committees. To become chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Thomas would have to convince House Republican leaders to bypass seniority as one of the major requirements for the post. Thomas, the second senior Republican on the Ways and Means Committee, is challenging Rep. Philip Crane, R-Ill., the senior Republican on the committee, for the assignment. In a phone interview, Thomas said when Republicans took control of Congress after the 1994 election, the members deemed seniority ``important, but not absolute'' in electing committee chairmen. Senior members of committees were passed over for leadership slots on occasion in favor of other, more able candidates. Thomas said he expects the steering committee will hold to that practice this time as well. ``Everyone has their their own style and presentation,'' Thomas said. ``I emphasize coordination and communication.'' Thomas said it would be presumptuous pre·sump·tu·ous adj. Going beyond what is right or proper; excessively forward. [Middle English, from Old French presumptueux, from Late Latin praes to lay out an agenda until the committee members get input from President-elect George W. Bush. Thomas noted that the committee's jurisdiction, including taxes and health care, covers about ``three-fourths of a Bush stump speech.'' Also running for the Ways and Means chairmanship is Rep. E. Clay Shaw, R-Fla., the third senior Republican on the committee. Congressional sources say, however, it is unlikely the steering committee will bypass the top two senior members in favor of Shaw. Crane is circulating a letter among his House colleagues noting his seniority, having served in Congress 10 years longer than Thomas, who was first elected in 1978. Crane states in the letter he will be a ``team player'' for the Republican agenda. ``He has the most seniority and he believes that should be the most important factor in choosing the chairman,'' said Crane spokesman Bryce Dustman. ``By not choosing on seniority, that creates the potential for divisiveness.'' Earlier this year, Crane admitted to having an alcohol problem and said he had sought treatment at a Maryland rehabilitation center. Since then, Dustman said, Crane has received an outpouring of support, and it does not appear to be an issue in the chairmanship battle. Crane is endorsed for the post by the conservative think tank Free Congress Foundation. The FCF FCF Free Cash Flow FCF Free Congress Foundation (conservative activist group) FCF Feline Conservation Federation FCF Frontiersmen Camping Fellowship FCF Functional Check Flight FCF Fluids and Combustion Facility applauded Crane's anti-tax stance and questioned Thomas' commitment to the Republican agenda. ``If Bill Thomas becomes chairman of Ways and Means, the Democrats will be delighted. They will have someone with whom they can work, as he is close to their views on many issues,'' FCF president Paul Weyrich wrote in a Nov. 27 commentary. ``Conservatives have everything to gain if Crane wins the race and everything to lose if Thomas wins. Right now Thomas is way ahead. Crane will have to run and run hard to catch up.'' In the Nov. 27 commentary, Weyrich said the Thomas-Crane battle might deserve as much attention as the Al Gore-George Bush fight for the presidency. ``As much as we are paying attention to the prolonged presidential contest, we ought to be tuning in tuning in, v process in which a therapeutic touch practitioner centers himself or herself so as to be aligned with or “in tune” with a healing energy “frequency,” so that the patient may choose to join the practitioner (tune to this race,'' Weyrich wrote. ``At the end of the day, it may well turn out to be every bit as important as who occupies the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.''
