LOCAL NOTES.Basketball: College of the Canyons (2-5) defeated Mount San Jacinto 100-77 to place third in the Antelope Valley tournament that was played this weekend. Curtis Wills scored 22 points to lead the Cougars. Woodley Polynice, Ron Slater and Kevin King each scored 13 points for Canyons. Mike Posey had nine points and 10 assists (24 for the tournament). King and Posey each were selected to the all-tournament team. Canyons plays West Valley College in the Midstate tournament starting Thursday at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. Golf: Nine-year-old Shane Carlson scored a hole-in-one in a Junior Golf Glow Ball tournament Saturday at Vista Valencia golf course. The fourth grader used an eight iron on the fifth hole. His father, Dave Carlson, said Shane has only been golfing for two months. The National Hole in One Foundation calculates that a golfer will make a hole in one every 12,000 tee shots. In addition to his eagle, Shane also had two birdies during the first round on the fourth and sixth holes. Jeff Ziembieda's team took first place in the tournament, with an even par score of 27 for the first nine holes and a score of two under par (25) for the glow ball round. Jason and Brandon Christenson and their father, Mike, took second place with the help of 7-year-old Jason's putting in the glow ball round. Eric Thomas and his father, Mark, took third place by sinking some critical long putts. The tournament was the final Junior Golf Tournament of the season. This month's tournament was an adult-junior team event. Each team consisted of an adult and one or two junior golfers. Basketball: Boys and girls 8 to 13 will show their skills in shooting free throws at the Elks Hoop Shoot on Saturday at Lancaster High School, 44701 32nd St. W. Competition will begin at 10 a.m., and each contestant will shoot 25 free throws. The boy and girl in each age group who makes the most baskets will advance to the district competition. Soccer: The Lancaster High School Boys' Soccer Boosters will present the inaugural 1996 Eagles Classic Boys Varsity-Junior Varsity Soccer Tournament on Saturday. Baseball: Palmdale Little League will hold early sign-ups from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Domenic Massari Park at 55th Street East and Avenue R-4. Parents are asked to bring proof of residence and copies of athletes' birth certificates for all players new to the league. Sign-ups are for boys and girls 5 to 15 for softball and baseball.
