LOCAL NOTES\Mariners' hockey . . .

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore and Bryan Winchell

New supporter: Mariners coach Sean McGillivray has been talking all season about moving his team up from junior-B status to a junior-A league.

And after coming to Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  to play two games against the Mariners, Jackson Hole Jackson Hole, fertile Rocky Mt. valley, c.50 mi (80 km) long and 6 to 8 mi (9.6–12.8 km) wide, NW Wyo., partly in Grand Teton National Park. Jackson Lake, 39 sq mi (101 sq km), a natural lake through which the Snake River flows, was dammed in 1916 to control  coach Mike Sullivan, whose team plays in the American Frontier junior-A Hockey League, or ASHL ASHL Adult Safe Hockey League (Canada) , is convinced Ventura has the type of program to make the move.

"They have a junior-A organization," Sullivan said. "The only thing they lack is a superstar, and they'll get that if they become a junior-A team."

The Mariners are attempting to join the ASHL, and Sullivan, who is a member of the league's board, said McGillivray gave him every reason to believe they have the program to do it.

"When we look at an organization, we not only look at the team's on-ice performance but the whole organization," Sullivan said. "And everything here has been first class."

Sullivan, though, said it was this trip that has given him confidence in the Mariners' move to junior-A status.

"I'm a believer in 'Seeing is believing,' " Sullivan said. "I wouldn't say so many good things about them if I hadn't come here and seen it for myself. But this is not a fly-by-night organization. Sean tells you he's going to do something, and he does it."

Roadblocks: The Mariners' move to the ASHL has one major roadblock: travel. Ventura would be the only team in California in a league that has teams in Wyoming, Colorado and Montana.

Normally, teams in the league travel to away games by bus. However, because many of the players are still in high school and couldn't afford to miss a week of school for a bus trip to California, the ASHL would need to set up a deal with an airline.

"If we could do that, that would be a deciding factor," Sullivan said.

Also helping matters would be if the Mariners could get another team - like the Anaheim Junior Mighty Ducks

 - from the area to join the league with them.

"It would make sense to have two teams out here, so each team could play four games when they came here," Sullivan said.
