LOCAL NOTES\Basketball.Byline: Darnell Felton Moorpark High School's girls junior varsity finished 20-0 this year, making Moorpark the only school in the county to have both varsity and JV teams go undefeated in the regular season. It also was the first time both teams won the league title. The Musketeers were led by sophomore starters Lisa Estill, Leanea Gutierrez, Meaghan Finnerty, Melissa Bentley and Nicole Nestico, with Katy Berry and Nicole King contributing. This group of sophomore players has compiled a 36-3 record over the past two years. Estill led the Musketeers in scoring with a 14.2 average, and Nicole Nestico averaged 11.1, and 10 rebounds per game. The margin of victory for the Moorpark JVs was 23.5 points per game. Coach Gene Hatten said, "I feel that all seven of my sophomores on this team will contribute next year. I feel they have the components that they need to win." Santa Susana Boys Baseball updates: Danny Turlock had two doubles and pitched five scoreless innings to lead the Bronco Angels to a 10-0 victory over the Mariners. Johnny Arisohn had a home run and Matt Palomarez had two singles for the Angels. In a close game the Pony League Giants edged the Marlins 7-6. The Giants pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts. Andy Bruce had a triple and three RBI to lead the Giants. David Land went 2 for 3 with one RBI for the Giants. The Pony League White Sox defeated the Rockies 8-1. Josh Santor led the way with a home run and four RBI for the White Sox. Mark Modglin pitched a complete game, striking out two. Nick Nicassio had two doubles for the Rockies. Back-to-back home runs by Nick Hundley and Adam Smylie led the Bronco Dodgers to a 24-0 victory over the Marlins. WSC Baseball Report: Eric Jue from Moorpark College is ranked 18th with a .385 batting average and Richard Hernandez is ranked 20th with a .375 batting average in the Western State Conference. Softball: The Conejo Valley Senior Softball Team, the "50 Bucs" are going to enter the Anaheim Hills Senior Softball tournament this weekend. Manager Ed Gillette feels that the addition of two local athletes, Carl Prather and Lloyd Wood, has strengthened the team considerably. They will be trying to get their second straight championship, after their victory in the Laughlin, Nev., invitational last month. Catch the Spirit . . . Basketball: Ventura College basketball coach Virgil Watson and members of his state championship team will be presenting a camp for boys and girls ages 8-16 during spring break, April 1-5, 1996. On March 16, Ventura College made history by being the first community college ever to bring home first-place trophies for both the men's and women's basketball teams. Track & Field: Special Olympic track and field training for 1996 continues at the Simi Valley High School track between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Participants in the district's Alternative Recreation Program and volunteers are encouraged to attend the training session. The Ventura County Special Olympics meet is scheduled for May 11 at Larrabee Stadium, Ventura High School, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. |
