Valley College defensive lineman Pat Roskowick has signed a letter of intent with the University of Massachusetts, Monarchs coach Gary Barlow said Wednesday.

Roskowick, who attended Grant High, is the 15th player from Valley's 1997 squad to earn a scholarship.

``He is a great example of someone who used the JC system to his advantage,'' Barlow said. ``He came here, took a year off and hit the weights, and played nearly every position for us.''

CSUN adds outfielder: Cal State Northridge has signed Cerritos College outfielder Mike Bumstead to a letter of intent, the school announced.

Bumstead, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Big Bear High, was a two-time All-South Coast Conference selection.

The Matadors have signed 10 players to letters of intent.

Also signing: Cal State Northridge has signed two more track and field athletes: Ventura College sprinter/jumper Anicia Rimm and distance runner Rabeka Spagnolo.

Rimm won the state 100 meters and captured Western State Conference titles in the 100, 200 and long jump. Spagnolo, from the San Diego area, won the CIF Hall of Fame Championship in 1997 and lettered in distance events and cross country.

Their signings are the sixth and seventh for Northridge.

Scates honored: UCLA volleyball coach Al Scates has been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Coach of the Year. Scates led the Bruins to their - and his - 18th national championship this past season.

USC to get new track stadium: Thanks to a $2 million gift from an alumna, USC will build a track and field stadium on Cromwell Field. It is the largest gift the athletic department has ever received from an individual.
