Many of the state's best high school football players are facing All-Stars from Texas on July 25 at Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. Competing in a field of 101 fencers in the youth-14 foil division, the sophomore had a 12-0 record, including a 15-5 victory in the gold-medal match.

Snyder, who won the silver a year ago, led Chaminade to the title at the California All-State Fencing Championships in San Francisco in April.

Recent Chaminade graduate Juan Capdet placed 16th at the national championships in the Division II men's epee and placed among the top 24 in the under-19 men's epee. Chaminade middleschooler Matt Weiner finished among the top 32 in the under-12 men's foil.

Seniors excel: Vincent Malizia of Northridge recently competed in the California State Senior Games Championships in Pasadena, where he won the 400 meters, 800 and 1,500 in the 80-85 age group.

In addition, Leonard Holden Sr. of Winnetka won a gold medal in volleyball. The 82-year-old competed in the over-70 age group.

The Senior Olympics are held throughout the year in 14 California cities with 8,000 men and women over 50 competing in 30 events. For information about future competition, call (626) 397-6754.

Desert names coach: Mike Reno has taken over as Desert High's football coach. His first order of business is to snap the Scorpions' losing streak, which is at 30 games.

``This team hasn't won in so long that nobody has any idea how to win,'' said Reno, a Quartz Hill assistant last year. ``Basically, we're building from the ground up.''

Junior track: Steve Moss of Sherman Oaks recently won a gold medal and two silvers at the USATF USATF United States of America Track and Field (governing body for T&F, Race Walking & Distance Running)  National Youth Athletics Track and Field Championships in Spokane, Wash.

Moss, 14, won the gold in the youth boys 100-meter hurdles in 13.73 seconds and placed second in the high jump and pentathlon pentathlon (pĕntăth`lən), composite athletic event. In ancient Greece it comprised leaping, foot racing, wrestling, discus throwing, and casting the javelin. .
