LOCAL NOTES: QUARTERBACK NORRIS, TWO OTHER AVC PLAYERS SIGN.Byline: Daily News Three Antelope Valley College football players have signed letters of intent and will transfer to their respective schools at the semester break, assistant head coach Frank Blua announced Thursday. Quarterback Brad Norris and defensive back Clayton Roles signed with Adams State College in Colorado; wide receiver Ronnie Blair is headed to Wayne State in Nebraska. Both are NCAA Division II schools. Norris a former Quartz Hill High star who spent time at UNLV and Pierce College, passed for 918 yards and nine touchdowns. ``Brad has bounced around a lot. He has a really good chance to a starter right away,'' Blua said. Signing with the Alamosa, Colo., school is something of a homecoming for Roles, a Denver native who had three interceptions for AVC this year. Blair, who caught 22 passes for 321 yards and five touchdowns, will play for a Wayne State team that throws the football 40-50 times a game. ``This is a great situation for him,'' Blua said of Blair, who played high school football at Littlerock. ``They run a spread offense and line up four receivers.'' Sheffield to Crimson: Chaney Sheffield, a pitcher for Viewpoint, has accepted early admission into Harvard, which is Division I in baseball. Witt's Olympic dream alive: Former Louisville softball player Becky Witt, now at Fresno State, is a U.S. softball third-level team member. She continues to participate in USA Softball sponsored events and continues to work toward earning a spot on the 2000 Olympic team, which is the first level. Softball registrations: The West Valley girls softball league is registering players ages 6-18. Tryouts are Jan. 10 and Jan. 17 at Woodland Hills Park. Information: 818-382-2966. Cummins hurt: Chaminade midfielder Lia Cummins chipped an ankle bone during Tuesday's game against Chatsworth and will be out of soccer at least four to six weeks. Coach Mike Evans said he will try moving Carlie Stokes, Michelle French and Mindy Wyatt into Cummins' spot. Cummins has committed to Florida. Burbank coach out: Burbank High baseball coach Sean Martinez has been dismissed for using profane language in front of players and then lying about the incident to the school principal. The firing last week followed a heated confrontation between Martinez and booster-club president Steve Pennington on the school baseball field. Martinez later admitted lying to Burbank principal Ron Lipari in an account of the confrontation, which had been tape-recorded by Pennington. |
