LOCAL NOTES: `HOT TOT HOOPS' AND SEVERAL OTHER CAMPS BEING OFFERED FOR YOUNG ATHLETES.

The Rancho Simi Rancho San José de Nuestra Senora de Altagarcia y Simi is one of the land grants in California by the Spanish government. The name derives from Shimiji, the name of the Chumash village here before the Spanish.  Recreation and Park District is sponsoring summer sports camps for boys and girls boys and girls

Hot Tot Hoops for boys and girls ages 5 to 8, will run five consecutive Saturdays from July 11 through Aug. 8.

Basketball players 5 to 6 will meet from 9 to 10 a.m., and ages 7-8 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, Hot Shot baseball camp for ages 5 to 7 will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 7 to Aug. 6.

Andy Silva will conduct his co-ed soccer camp for ages 5 to 8 from July 20-24 and ages 9 to 13 from July 27-31. Silva will direct the Royal softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  camp for girls ages 6 to 12. Beginner camp is July 6-10; intermediate is July 13-17.

Water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in.  camp for ages 10 to 17 runs through July 30.

Baseball camp: The 1998 Lu Dawg Baseball Camps, directed by Cal Lutheran University head baseball coach Marty Slimak, will be held over seven sessions at CLU (language) CLU - (CLUster) An object-oriented programming language developed at MIT by Liskov et al in 1974-1975.

CLU is an object-oriented language of the Pascal family designed to support data abstraction, similar to Alphard.
 in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. . Each will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The dates for the five-day camps are Monday through July 17, July 20-24, July 27-31, Aug. 3-7, Aug. 10-14 and Aug. 17-21.

The camp is for youths ages 6 to 16.

The fee is $150 per player.

Basketball: The Ventura County/Moorpark 3-on-3 Jam is scheduled for Aug. 1-2 at Mesa Verde Middle School in Moorpark.

Basketball players, 7 to 70 years old, are invited to participate in the tournament. The three-on-three games will run Aug. 1 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Aug. 2 from 1-7 p.m.

There will also be a long-distance shooting contest during the event.

Trophies will be awarded to the winning teams.

Deadline for signups is July 20.

Soccer: Soccer Direct is accepting applications for its camps being held Aug. 2-6 in Thousand Oaks, Camarillo and Westlake Village.

The openings are for boys ages 8-17.
