Both chains are owned by Federated, but the Robinsons-May name is being retired nationwide. Many stores were simply slated for closing when the two chains merged earlier this year. ``There is enough business in that area that both can thrive,'' said spokeswoman Milinda Martin. ``There will be a fair amount of overlap. Then there are special items that would appeal to the specific customers that shop that mall.'' She stressed that both Promenade stores would stay open ``for the foreseeable future.'' One features women's fashions; the other menswear and furniture. Federated Department Stores, which owns Macy's, bought the May Department store chain in February and has been converting many of the Robinsons-Mays to Macy's. Macy's is renovating the 230,000-square-foot department store and making room for its signature brands like Charter Club and Alfani. The Robinsons-May store will close Sept. 8 and will open as a Macy's the next morning. The rebranding comes as the Topanga mall is undergoing a massive overhaul and expansion.
