the Robinsons-May store at Westfield Topanga Westfield Topanga, formerly known as the Westfield Shoppingtown Topanga and more commonly known to locals as the Topanga Mall or Topanga Plaza, is a two-story shopping mall consisting of 230 tenants spread across three sections.  as a Macy's, and will keep open two existing stores less than a mile away at the Westfield Promenade Westfield Promenade is a large shopping mall owned by The Westfield Group and located on Topanga Canyon Boulevard in the Woodland Hills district of Los Angeles. It was previously known as The Promenade at Woodland Hills and Westfield Shoppingtown Promenade.  in Woodland Hills.

The new, full-service Macy's will replace the Robinsons-May next month after some renovation, company officials said. Both chains are owned by Federated, but the Robinsons-May name is being retired nationwide. Many stores were simply slated for closing when the two chains merged earlier this year.

``There is enough business in that area that both can thrive,'' said spokeswoman Milinda Martin. ``There will be a fair amount of overlap. Then there are special items that would appeal to the specific customers that shop that mall.''

She stressed that both Promenade stores would stay open ``for the foreseeable future.'' One features women's fashions; the other menswear and furniture.

Federated Department Stores, which owns Macy's, bought the May Department store chain in February and has been converting many of the Robinsons-Mays to Macy's.

Retail analyst Kurt Barnard said he was surprised the stores would be located near each other.

``The proximity is rather startling star·tle

``Terry Lundgren, who runs Federated, does not do foolish things,'' Barnard said. ``I'm quite sure he has done his due diligence Research; analysis; your homework. This term has caught on in all industries, because it sounds so "wired." Who would want to do analysis or research when they can do due diligence. See wired. . He has done his demographic studies and I'm sure that when the day of the opening comes, the store will be jammed with people.''

Macy's has locations in Burbank, Glendale, North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Woodland Hills, Martin said.

Macy's is renovating the 230,000-square-foot department store and making room for its signature brands like Charter Club and Alfani. The Robinsons-May store will close Sept. 8 and will open as a Macy's the next morning.

The rebranding comes as the Topanga mall is undergoing a massive overhaul and expansion. A new Nordstrom store will open this fall and the existing site will be demolished and rebuilt as a Neiman Marcus. Additionally, a multistory mul·ti·sto·ry   also mul·ti·sto·ried
