LOCAL HOPEFULS.

Byline: Jon Wilner

TOBY BAILEY John Garfield "Toby" Bailey (born November 19 1975 in Los Angeles, California, United States) is an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball at UCLA and was one of the stars of their 1995 National Championship team.

School: UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX

career. But scouts question his jump shot, and Bailey's pre-draft workouts have not tempered that concern. The game does not come easy for Bailey, who tends to force the action when his shot doesn't fall. He interviewed with the Bulls last week, but that might be too good to be true.

Projection: Early/mid second round.

ANDREW BETTS Andrew Richard Betts (born 11 May 1977 in Coalville, Leicestershire, England) is an English professional basketball player currently playing for Spanish ACB League club Cajasol Sevilla. Career Notes

School: Long Beach State

Height: 7-1

did not play well in the pre-draft camp in Chicago and must hope a team needing frontcourt depth takes a chance on him late in the first round. Michael Olowokandi, he's not.

Projection: Second round.

PETER CORNELL

School: Loyola Marymount

Height: 6-10

The skinny: Cornell, an early entrant, has impressive physical tools and showed promise in spurts. But he, too, played poorly in Chicago and is almost off the radar screen.

Projection: Free agent.

J.R. HENDERSON

School: UCLA

Height: 6-9

The skinny: Henderson is a terrific ballhandler for his size, but he's a tweener Tweener can refer to:

  • Tweener (basketball), a player who is able to play two positions in basketball.
: not polished enough from the perimeter to play small forward, not physical enough to play power forward. He showed little taste for physicality in Chicago - thus failing to answer the NBA's most-pressing concern - and his stock is dropping.

Projection: Late first round.

KRIS JOHNSON

School: UCLA

Height: 6-3

The skinny: Johnson does not have the requisite quickness or defensive prowess for a shooting guard, but he's woefully woe·ful also wo·ful

1. Affected by or full of woe; mournful.

2. Causing or involving woe.

3. Deplorably bad or wretched:
short for a forward. His deft scoring touch is his greatest strength, yet he didn't shoot well at the Desert Classic all-star game and - tellingly - was not invited to Chicago.

Projection: Free agent, or Europe.

JELANI McCOY

School: UCLA

Height: 6-9

The skinny: McCoy, with his great talent and greater immaturity, is the prototype '90s draft pick. He has a fabulous upside, but the potential for trouble looms. (He left UCLA in February after reportedly failing the school's drug policy multiple times.) Another problem: He has power-forward skills but is convinced he's a wing man. A veteran team would be best.

Projection: Late first round/early second.
