Sandpiper sandpiper, common name for some members of the large family Scolopacidae, small shore birds, including the snipe and the curlew. Sandpipers are wading birds with relatively long legs and long, slender bills for probing in the sand or mud for their prey—all  Networks is expected to announce today that it has signed an agreement with America Online See AOL.  to be the conduit for delivering audio and video broadcasts to the service's 18 million subscribers.

The deal is the result of a relationship begun earlier this year, when America Online was the largest investor in a $21.5 million round of venture funding for the Thousand Oaks-based Sandpiper.

Scott Yara, Sandpiper's vice president of marketing, said the agreement is the latest in a series of deals in which Sandpiper becomes the means for distributing content to large Internet service providers Internet service provider (ISP)

Sandpiper also has alliances with Inktomi, RealNetworks and Sun Microsystems, Yara said.

Sandpiper provides Internet sites with a network of servers that duplicate content on multiple servers in order to speed access to information, Yara said.

Sandpiper's Footprint service delivers streaming audio and video to online customers. It allows for the live broadcasts of concerts and other events, Yara said.

``We're effectively building the broadcast networks of the Internet,'' Yara said.
