SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Director Don Froelich of Division 3 is stepping down. Brian Roney and Jacque McMillan are battling for his seat.

Tom Campbell, appointed last year to an at-large seat, faces Gundy G. Tollefson and John B. Steffen; and Edward Colley is challenging Division I representative Ed Dunn for his seat.

Also on the ballot are legislative seats for U.S. Congress and the state Legislature.

Longtime U.S. Rep. Howard ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, faces a challenge from Democrat Bob Conaway, an attorney, and Libertarian Frank M. Consolo Jr., a brewery manager, for the 25th Congressiona Running for Assembly District 38 are incumbent Republican candidate Keith Richman; Democrat Paula L. Calderon, a health care manager; and Libertarian candidate Karl Lembke, a water quality inspector.

The other issue that has drawn interest in Santa Clarita is Proposition 47, the $13 billion bond measure for school construction. districts are rallying for the measure to win matching funds and other money for local school projects. Opponents argue that the state cannot afford the debt.
