LOCAL DAY OF GOOD DEEDS HUNDREDS PUT DEEDS BEHIND WORDS IN WORK SHOWING THAT CHARITY BEGINS IN HOMETOWN.

PALMDALE - Hundreds of volunteers rolled up their sleeves Saturday and went to work for local charities as part of the United Way's annual Commitment to Caring event.

The event draws groups from major companies and schools, as well as individuals, to help nonprofit organizations paint, clean and do odd jobs odd jobs nplchapuzas fpl

``These organizations do so much for us and ask for so little,'' said Kathleen Baker, who has volunteered for the event the past two years. ``They keep our kids off the streets, away from drugs and gangs. They support our battered women and our elderly, and they donate food to the hungry.

In addition to painting, local nonprofit agencies get help with landscaping, carpet cleaning and an array of other chores they need done. In some cases, as many as five dozen volunteers pitch in on a major job.

Agencies in Palmdale, Lancaster and Littlerock benefited from the free services (O.Eng. Law) such feudal services as were not unbecoming the character of a soldier or a freemen to perform; as, to serve under his lord in war, to pay a sum of money, etc.

``It's like a five- or six-hour commitment, and then you can stand back and say, Hey, I did something positive,'' said Larry Caird of the Valley Child Guidance Clinic. ``But the people who use those agencies can enjoy your work all year long. It's just a great feeling.''
