LOCAL CAP CADETS GAIN 5TH PLACE AT NATIONALS.

ROSAMOND - Civil Air Patrol
The U.S. Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is the civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). It was created on 1 December, 1941 by Administrative Order 9, with Maj. Gen. John F.
 cadets from three local squadrons finished in fifth place at the National Cadet Competition 2001 held in Colorado Springs Colorado Springs, city (1990 pop. 281,140), seat of El Paso co., central Colo., on Monument and Fountain creeks, at the foot of Pikes Peak; inc. 1886. It is a year-round resort and a booming military, technological, and commercial city. , Colo.

Cadet Master Sgt. Casey Schaubschlager of Cadet Squadron 46 from Tehachapi placed first overall individually in the competition, winning the title of honor An honorary title or title of honor is a title bestowed upon individuals or organizations as an award in recognition of their merits.

Sometimes the title bears the same or nearly the same name as a title of authority, but the person bestowed does not have to carry any
 cadet.

``Considering this is the first year they've gone, they did a very good job, and they really tried,'' said Capt. Robert Setner, commander of Cadet Squadron 49.

The cadets came from Squadron 46 in Tehachapi, Pancho Barnes Florence Lowe "Pancho" Barnes (July 14, 1901 – March 30, 1975), was a pioneer of women's aviation and the owner of the celebrated Happy Bottom Riding Club located on land annexed into Edwards Air Force Base in southern California's Antelope Valley in the southwestern United  Squadron 49 from Rosamond and Squadron 84 from Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. .

The competition included a one-mile run; a knowledge bowl and a written test covering the history, customs, and courtesy of the Civil Air Patrol and Air Force regulations; standard and innovative drill; and volleyball, which showcased teamwork.

The team was flown to the competition in an Air National Guard C-130 cargo plane after Air Force Plant 42 Airfield Manager Master Sgt. Ken Neitzel contacted Lt. Col. Dave Clemments of the 146 Air National Guard Unit in Point Mugu.

Lt. Col. Celeo Wright, base commander of Air Force Plant 42, allowed the National Guard to fly the team in and out of Plant 42.

The cadets, ages 12-18, practiced twice a week for six months before the competition. They advanced to the national competition by winning the regional competition, held two months ago at Vandenberg Air Force Base Vandenberg Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 3,456 acres (1,399 hectares), SW Calif., near Lompoc; chief Pacific coast launch site for military satellites.  near Lompoc. The team competed against squadrons from five different states.

Six teams were at the regional competition.

``This is the first time California has even had anyone go to the regionals in 10 years,'' Setner said.

The Civil Air Patrol is an Air Force auxiliary that does primarily search and rescue work. The local cadets have helped after the Northridge Earthquake, and did sandbagging Sandbagging is the practice of deceptively portraying oneself as being in a weaker position than is true.

Also receiving recognition at the competition was Cadet Capt. Les Raymond of Squadron 49, who received the Amelia Earhart Award from National CAP Commander Brig. Gen. James Bobick.

Fewer than 6 percent of all Civil Air Patrol cadets receive this award.

The Civil Air Patrol cadet program is open to young people ages 12-21. The patrol also has a program for adults. For more information, call Setner at (661) 256-2991.
