``Since High Desert (Hospital) closed, we have been getting oncology patients referred here from out there,'' said Gretchen McGinley, chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

at Olive View. ``We needed to find someone who provides that service out in the High Desert so patients don't have to come down here for radiation therapy. It's for patience convenience.''

County supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to approve changing Valley Tumor's existing contract, under which it provide services to patients referred from the county's High Desert Health System, to add on Olive View as a referring facility.

The change will add $92,000 to the three-year, $711,000 contract with Valley Tumor that runs through March 31, 2007, for a total cost of $803,000.

McGinley said Olive View patients from the Antelope Valley have been going to two providers in the San Fernando Valley. The change will affect an estimated 20 to 25 people, she said.

recommended approval of the change to make diagnostic and therapeutic services more accessible to Olive View cancer patients who live in the Antelope Valley, a county staff report said.

``Currently, the agreement with Valley Tumor provides these radiation services only to patients referred by High Desert Health System,'' the report said.

The agreement will cover both routine and emergency diagnostic and therapeutic services, including ultrasound, nuclear cardiology nuclear cardiology Imaging The use of nuclear imaging techniques in the noninvasive study of cardiovascular disease–eg, myocardial perfusion imaging, planar imaging, SPECT–single-photon-emission computed tomography, infarction imaging.  and mammography mammography, diagnostic procedure that uses low-dose X rays to detect abnormalities in the breasts. The report said Valley Tumor is the only provider in the greater Lancaster area that provides radiation therapy for cancer patients.
