LOCAL 243 URGES CONSUMER BOYCOTT AGAINST HIGHLAND SUPERSTORES

LOCAL 243 URGES CONSUMER BOYCOTT AGAINST HIGHLAND SUPERSTORES
DETROIT, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Teamsters Local 243:
While other Metro-Detroit workers are busy celebrating Labor Day 1992 with parades and family gatherings, Teamsters Local 243 will be spending this Labor Day fighting to preserve jobs for their members employed at Highland Superstores.
Local 243 members will be handbilling during the annual Detroit Labor Day Parade to raise public awareness about the union's problems with Highland and urging consumers not to patronize Highland Superstores until the employees are assured that they will continue working.
In addition, beginning at 3 p.m. Local 243 will be distributing information outside of the Southfield Highland Superstores (23361 Telegraph just north of Nine Mile Road) to educate consumers about the situation.
The union's boycott against Highland, which is endorsed by the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO, was called following an announcement by management that, effective Sept. 1, 35 Local 243 drivers, some of whom have more than 20 years of service with the company, would be fired and replaced with independent contract workers.
As of now the company has not yet followed through on this threat and Local 243's drivers are continuing to work on a day-by-day basis. Nevertheless, the union is determined to do whatever it takes to preserve jobs for these workers, and a consumer campaign is the best way to let managment know we mean business.
Highland is attempting to save money by replacing our members, but in fact will damage the financial condition of the already-troubled company by forcing this boycott action.
