The other motorist had been looking into the rising sun and may have run a red light for Avenue J at 30th Street West, sheriff's deputies said. The SUV slammed into the driver-side door of the 1999 Pontiac that Tyler was driving.

Parents and students heading to Lancaster High had to drive past the wreckage from the 6:30 a.m. crash.

The other motorist, Susan Atwood, 54, of Palmdale, was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital with what deputies described as minor injuries.

The fatal crash came on top of tragedies within the last year for both families, friends said.

Atwood's 18-year-old son, Alexander, died after a August 2004 traffic collision in which his Acura compact hit the rear end of a school bus carrying children to school in East Lancaster.

The Duggins teens' father, Tom, died in April of a massive heart attack while with his son's robotics team in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. A friend's father described Tyler as ``a great kid'' who was enthusiastic about everything.

``It's a tragic loss for his family, for his school and his community. Tyler was a great friend to everybody. He was a hard worker. Not only that - he was just recovering from the loss of his father,'' said Greg Tepe, a Lancaster School District Lancaster School District may refer to:

Tepe said Tyler and his father, Tom, got close through robotics. The boy was hoping to follow in the footsteps of his father, a welder and mechanic who worked at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

``He cleaned out his dad's garage and got out his dad's welding equipment,'' Tepe said. ``They were a really close family. When the dad died, they pulled together to be even closer, and Tyler took on the role of being a father.

``We are deeply shocked and sorry for this tragic event. We want to stand around the family and support them in their time of need. We are going to miss Tyler. He's going to be deeply missed among all of us.''

Tyler's death was the second in four days of a local high school student.

On Friday night, Evan Ames, 16, of Lake Hughes died when an SUV in which he was riding ran off Lake Hughes Road Hughes Road is an arterial road in South Mumbai linking Opera House with Kemps Corner. Paul Ames and passenger Ryan Villavicencio, 17, of Lake Hughes were flown to a hospital.

Winn said former Lancaster High staffers who transferred this year to newly opened Eastside High returned to Lancaster High to see if they could be of any help. Many of them knew Tyler, Winn said.

Both Duggins teens were wearing seat belts, but the impact on the driver's door was too great for Tyler to survive, deputies said.

``In this case, it wouldn't have made much difference,'' a sheriff's sergeant said.
