LOCAL: PREP EXTRA : ATHLETES OF THE WEEK.

MIKE SEIDMAN

Westlake High Senior tight end

All Travis Campbell had to say was one word after Westlake High's 27-17 win over Canyon on Friday.

``Seidman,'' Campbell uttered.

Say no more. Tight end extraordinaire ex·tra·or·di·naire

, emerging defensive force, linebacker-crushing runner. Mike Seidman is becoming all of those things in 1998. Every major university in the country has offered a scholarship. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound senior caught seven passes for 148 yards and a touchdown against the Cowboys, had two key sacks, a handful of hurries and a tipped pass on Canyon's final play.

``He was awesome,'' Westlake quarterback Zac Wasserman said.

One play in particular stood out. Seidman stretched out in the end zone to catch a 15-yard touchdown pass from Wasserman to seal the victory, diving to his left to make the spectacular grab.

``I just told him to get open in the end zone and I'd get him the ball,'' Wasserman said. ``And that's what he did.''

It was quite a week for Anderson, who helped lead the Pioneers to two victories against top-level competition.

On Monday, she finished ahead of three runners who had beaten her just two days earlier as Simi Valley defeated rivals Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. ``I knew if I didn't break up that pack on Monday, (Thousand Oaks) would automatically win,'' Anderson said. ``My coach said, `You know what you have to do.' ''

Anderson wasn't through. On Friday, she won the Channel Islands Invitational with a time of 18 minutes, 18 seconds over the three-mile course.

Anderson, who finished 12th in the league meet last year, also finished seventh and Simi Valley beat Thousand Oaks and won the Bell-Jeff Invitational on Sept. 26. It was the first time the Pioneers beat the Lancers lanc·er

UP & COMING

JOHN WHITE

Westlake sophomore

WR/DB

White is enjoying a terrific year on the Westlake sophomore team. In an easy win over Canyon on Friday, he caught five passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. That brings his season total to 24 catches for 455 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has two rushing scores. Defensively, he's the team's leading tackler at linebacker, averaging nine per game.

``If we needed to put him on the offensive line, he'd be able to do that,'' Westlake coach Mike Leibin said.

HEAD 2 HEAD Matchup of the Week

TRAVIS CAMPBELL

Wide Receiver

Westlake

We say Travis Campbell, but you may as well add Kevin Howard Kevin C. Howard (born June 25, 1981 in Hinsdale, Illinois) is a infielder in Minor League Baseball who plays for the Jacksonville Suns in the Double-A Southern League. , Chris Catalano and Mike Seidman to the list, too. The Warriors' high-powered passing attack is no one-man show, although Campbell is Westlake's best wide receiver when he's healthy. Right now he's still banged up with a partially separated right shoulder, but said he'll play Friday and that's not good news for the Highlanders. When he's on the field, Campbell has to be accounted for by one of two defensive backs. That means Seidman, Catalano and Howard will face one-on-one coverage.

JESSE MORRIS

Cornerback

Royal

It's not all on Morris' shoulders, he'll get help from fellow corner Robert Espinoza. Together they give the Highlanders a pair of outstanding DBs. Ordinarily, they would be enough to shut down a passing game. But when you consider Royal also must deal with Seidman, Catalano and Howard, it's just too much offense to account for. Still, if Morris and Espinoza can make plays - and especially create turnovers - Royal can sttoay close and pull off an upset. Both have the speed to run with Campbell and the others.
