OLIVER JACKSON

Royal

Track and field

Jackson, a junior, won the long jump at the Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

Mt.
Relays with a leap of 24 feet, 4-3/4 inches, the best mark in the nation this season. The jump improved on his previous nation-leading mark of 24-3-1/2 posted at the Arcadia Invitational on April 10.

Jackson has improved his personal best by nearly 15 inches since his sophomore season, when he won the Southern Section Masters Meet title. He also won the 110-meter high hurdles, 300-meter intermediate hurdles, triple jump and long jump to lead the Highlanders to a Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. ``I am more relaxed knowing I am the national leader,'' Jackson said. ``I practice better so I can excel more.''

ANNMARIE TURPIN

Simi Valley

Track and Field

Turpin, a senior and two-sport star who also played on the Pioneers' basketball team, cleared a state-leading 5 feet, 10 inches, in the high jump during a Marmonte League meet last Thursday. She followed it with a 5-8 jump to win at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Saturday. She also teamed with Ashley Luna, Amanda Anderson Amanda Anderson is the head of the English department at Johns Hopkins University. She received her Ph.D. from Cornell University and taught at the University of Illinois before coming to Hopkins in 1999.  and Karen LeBlanc to finish fifth in the distance medley in a school-record 12:48.23. At the Arcadia Invitational, Turpin set a school record of 45.59 in the 300 low hurdles.

``It was something that I wanted for a very long time. It really did not matter what I needed to do to get it,'' Turpin said about clearing 5-10 after unsuccessful attempts in four previous meets. ``There was never any mental block. It was just a matter of time.''

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

``It's like dotting the Is and crossing the Ts. We write an essay, but our grammar is terrible. An English teacher would kill us.''

- Mike Stone, Reseda baseball coach

HEAD 2 HEAD Matchup of the Week

    ERIN VOELTZ

    Westlake High

    pitcher

She has put it all together in her junior year, developing into one of the Marmonte League's dominant pitchers. She's helped rally the Warriors to four straight league wins after losing to Newbury Park in the conference opener. Voeltz has worked closely with Westlake coach Barbara Jordan to add off-speed pitches to keep opponents off balance. The results have been noticeable in some strong outings recently. This is a key game for the Warriors, who could tie Newbury Park with a win, depending on what the teams do earlier this week.

    CINDY MURAN

    Newbury Park

    Infielder

Muran is the No. 3 hitter in the Panthers' potent batting order, following Oli Keohohou and Nancy Pabon. Keohohou is one of the top hitters in the area. Voeltz can chose to work around Keohohou, but then she'll have to deal with Pabon and Muran, no easy task considering both are clever contact hitters who can advance runners. Muran is a versatile hitter and infielder and is one of the area's top players. She's a clutch batter with runners in scoring position, so Voeltz needs to be careful.

    UP & COMING

    ASHLEE FREEMAN

    Chaminade Middle School

Freeman, a 14-year-old eighth grader, pitches a softball as fast as 61 mph. She's 2-0-2 and has given up just five hits in 19 innings with 34 strikeouts and has a 0.08 ERA. Freeman, who also plays travel ball and soon will move up to an under-16 team, is batting .612 with 14 RBI RBI
