LOCAL: PREP EXTRA : ATHLETES OF THE WEEK.JOHN GARFINKEL Highland Senior wrestler Garfinkel placed third at the state wrestling finals in Stockton, the highest finish for any Golden Leaguer since the tournament started in 1972 and the area's best this season. Garfinkel, a 160-pound senior, won 5 of 6 matches over two days, including a 2-1 comeback victory in his last match against Ryan Brooks of Lemoore High. Garfinkel (68-5, 39 pins) tied Stuart Young's 1997 school single-season win record. Garfinkel has a shot to break the record at the Nationals in Pittsburgh on March 26-29. ``This was the best, the best I've done so far,'' said Garfinkel, 232-29 for his career, including a state-record 135 pins. ``The state tournament was the most important. I thought I did pretty good.'' MEGAN MEGAN Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature LANDRESS Chatsworth Senior stopper Opponents know her well. When they see her coming at them, they know to expect a body to make hard contact. Landress' bruised knees epitomize her never-ending quest to stop opposing offenses. This week, she led a Chancellors defense that allowed no goals in the City semifinal and final. In fact, the defense didn't allow any goals in four playoff matches, and Landress became one of several teammates to win four consecutive section titles. ``I knock into them as much as they knock into me,'' she said. ``I play aggressively. When a girl gets me mad, `OK, you want to play like this? We'll play like this.' I try to intimidate.'' BY THE NUMBERS 5 - Home runs Grant's baseball team hit in the first week of the season, already eclipsing the four it hit in all of last year. QUOTE OF THE WEEK ``We weren't playing to tie. They don't want that.
