LOCAL: PREP EXTRA : ATHLETES OF THE WEEK.

COLLEEN SCHIMAN

Agoura

sophomore 2-meter

This is a player you'll be hearing plenty from in the coming years. With 51 goals, 39 assists and 20 steals this season, Schiman is showing she's among the area's elite.

A reason: Growing up in Hawaii, where the sport is bigger, she played water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in.  as part of youth programs.

She transferred from Westlake last season, but no one noticed much. Yet Schiman led Agoura to an 8-0 league season and a 21-5 record. The Chargers knocked off Glendale in Saturday's Southern Section Div. II first round. Schiman scored three goals to lead the team, but some of her value has been the intangibles.

``She gave us a second hole set instead of relying on just one,'' Agoura coach Jason Rosenthal said. ``She gave us scoring in the middle. Her experience was a piece of the puzzle. She made us better.''

Reseda

Senior

Sims scored three goals to lead the Regents to a convincing 5-1 win over Fremont in the opening round of the City Section playoffs Friday.

Sims had an up-and-down regular season after reporting a bit out of shape. His scoring - 18 goals in 25 games - wasn't as high as coach Julio Castillo had hoped, but Sims appears ready to make a strong run in the postseason. Reseda, the defending City Champion, is favored to repeat this year.

``We always expect him to do well, especially in the playoffs,'' Castillo said. ``He's getting (in better shape) and he's running and shooting the ball better than in the regular season. And he's sharing the ball, that's what gives him even more scoring chances. His teammates trust him.''

Despite Sims' three goals, the Regents rely on a balanced attack. In Friday's win, Jesse Servin added two goals.

``He's not our main guy, we like the team aspect,'' Castillo said. ``That's why we won the championship last year and it's the reason we have a chance to repeat.''

shooter who, when he's on, is one of the top outside threats in the area. He played well Friday in a 80-66 win over Morningside to open the Southern Section Division III-A playoffs, leading the way with 17 points and 12. That's the type of balanced game the Wolverines need against Chaminade in the semifinals Friday. Lakey will be a three-way factor, helping to stretch Chaminade's defense with his outside shooting, loosen up the middle with dribble drives and slow the Eagles down by guarding Cook.

CAYCE COOK

Chaminade guard

The 5-9 guard has shown leadership with his steady play down the stretch. In Friday's 58-34 win over Estancia es·tan·cia

in the first round, he had 11 points and kept the Eagles' offense afloat despite an off night from Scott Borchart. Cook will split time guarding Lakey with Ryan Arceo and Clarence Mitchell, but if it's close at the end, he'll be the guy in charge of containing the explosive guard. Cook has struggled this year with his offense, but if he can finish strongly he could be the key in Chaminade repeating as division champions.

ON DECK: Highlights in the week of local sports

This week's must-see: Agoura at Harvard-Westlake

Analysis: It's a battle between established and rising water polo powers. Mission League-champion Harvard-Westlake, ranked fourth in Div. II, is on a 17-game win streak and has lost just three times in the past three years. Plus, it boasts Janine Jackson Janine Jackson (born January 30, 1965 in Wilmington, Delaware) is the program director of FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting), and the co-host and co-producer of FAIR's syndicated radio show CounterSpin , who's on the junior national team. Agoura won the weaker Marmonte League with a mixture of sophomores and seniors, but it's been a kind of Cinderella year for the Chargers. Sophomore 2-meter player Colleen Schiman leads the team with 51 goals and 39 assists.
