LOCAL: PREP EXTRA : ATHLETES OF THE WEEK.ANDREW MOORE Crespi Sophomore guard Moore put on one of the most impressive shooting displays in recent memory, hitting four consecutive 3-pointers during a decisive fourth-quarter run to lead Crespi to a 42-38 upset win over Mission League rival Chaminade on Friday. Moore, a quiet 6-foot-0 shooting guard, entered the quarter with just four points but finished with 18 thanks to his brilliant shooting display. His final 3-pointer with just over two minutes left put Crespi ahead for good, 39-36. The Celts trailed 33-27 when he started his shooting streak early in the final period. ``I got in a groove and I felt like I couldn't miss,'' said Moore. ``After that first one, I just felt like I could hit anything.'' Crespi coach Dick Dornan had an inkling that somebody would step up in the fourth quarter. ``I knew somebody would get hot, I just didn't know who it would be,'' Dornan said. ``But Andrew stepped up and got the job done. He's a special player.'' RACHEL BURKONS Harvard-Westlake Junior driver Last year, the Harvard-Westlake girls' water polo team lacked a consistent offensive threat to match Jeanine Jackson and was upset in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section playoffs. The Wolverines have that threat now. Junior Rachel Burkons has rebounded from a so-so sophomore season to become one of the Wolverines' top players. Two of her best matches have come against rival Louisville, and last Tuesday Burkons scored two goals in a 4-1 victory. Harvard-Westlake is 12-1. Wolverines coach Rich Corso said Burkons is ``light years'' ahead of where she was last year. ``She's improved so much,'' Corso said. ``She's got a lot of confidence now . . . She's not only confident with the ball, but she's become a strong defensive player.'' We are the team to beat (in league). We have to play up to that standard.'' - Damaris Hinojosa Moorpark High girls' basketball star HEAD 2 HEAD SCOTT BORCHART Sophomore forward Chaminade Borchart, a 6-foot-8 forward, is one of the top sophomore prospects in the country, a gifted, heady player who can shoot, rebound and defend. He's only a 10th-grader, but Borchart plays beyond his years, combining tremendous court sense with a high level of skill. Borchart projects as more of a perimeter player in college, but he plays in the post for the Eagles. Still, he presents problems because he can knock down the medium-range outside shot as well as dominate around the basket. ALEX HOLMES Junior forward Harvard-Westlake This 6-foot-4, 300-pounder presents trouble with his deceiving quickness, athletic ability and shooting touch. He looks like a banger - which he can be - but he has the ability to step out to the perimeter and knock down 3-pointers. Holmes can use his size and strength to knock Borchart out of the block, then body him up with heavy leans to deny him easy looks in the paint. Offensively, Holmes needs to be aggressive, run the court, look for his shot down low but also bring Borchart outside.
