LOCAL: PREP EXTRA : ATHLETES OF THE WEEK.

DEVIN MONTGOMERY

Alemany senior guard

Many players, like Montgomery, begin basketball late because they've been playing football. They quickly learn that just because you are in shape to play football doesn't mean you can step right onto the basketball court and contribute.

Being in football shape is different from basketball shape. You run differently on the gridiron versus the court. And yet Montgomery's needed just two weeks.

The 6-foot-2 Montgomery led the Indians to the Chatsworth tournament title and earned himself the MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  award. He scored 75 points in the four games (18.75 average), including 29 in the championship game against the hosts.

``Here's a kid who spent all summer in football, and in two weeks he's able to be that successful on the basketball court,'' Alemany coach Daryl McDonald said. ``Devin, this being his senior year, he's been working hard. He's steadily gotten better.''

TASHEAN THOMAS

North Hollywood

senior guard

Her 98 points in four Burroughs tournament games - 33 against the hosts, 26 against Hoover, 21 against Agoura and 18 against undefeated Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  in the final - makes one take notice.

But take a look at this stat: 23 steals last week for the 5-foot-4 senior.

See? Staying close to the ground is a plus.

``When guards bring the ball up the court, even when she's not around, they're looking around to see where she is,'' North Hollywood coach Rich Allen said. ``She's off to a pretty good start.''

Thomas also has one other advantage: She's left-handed, making it easier to pick at and knock away the ball from those right-handed guards.

When she has the ball, she knows what to do with it. Take the first quarter against Burroughs: 19 points, including five 3-pointers. By halftime, she had 28.

For her, all these tournament games are nice, but only one thing matters: getting to the City final and beating Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m). , which Thomas believes will be there.

``We're looking at the bigger picture,'' Allen said. ``Tashean has matured. I'm glad that's how she's thinking.''
