LOCAL: FOOTBALL EXTRA : OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE.

Byline: The football beat is compiled by Michael A. Anastasi, Vincent Bonsignore, Chris Branam, Chris Cocoles, Brian Dalziel, Gerry Gittelson and Jim Inghram.

Let's face it. Burbank and Burroughs no longer belong in the Foothill League. They must compete against four Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  area-based schools that, thanks to continuous and prodigious growth in the region, benefit from an ever-increasing talent pool.

Likewise, with a more diverse student population that isn't as football-oriented as when Hoover and Glendale originally joined the Pacific League, these two neighboring schools find themselves consistently outmanned.

Add La Canada of the Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:
  • Río Hondo, a town in the Guatemalan department of Zacapa.

Right now, about the only thing that gets talked about - and not much these days, we might add - is who's going to win the Victory Bell, the perpetual trophy that goes to the winner of the Hoover/Glendale game.

Using a formula that awards 10 points for each victory, 2 for each rushing yard (you've got to establish the run), 1 point for each passing yard and 1 point for each point scored - then subtract 10 points for each loss and 2 points for each point allowed, we derive these Week 4 standings for our newly competitive league:

Burbank (1-3) 1,006

The senior running back rushed for 231 yards on only 17 carries, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass. Oh, yeah, he also scored four touchdowns.

Garcia has rushed for 473 yards on 58 carries, an average of 8.2 yards per run. He is also a top defensive player.

``He has great vision and a feel for the game,'' said Moorpark coach Ron Wilford. ``He does some things that you can't teach.''

Yeah, it's hilarious

Chaminade coach Ed Croson did not want to play Valencia. Even before the season began, he lamented the Eagles' Oct. 2 date against the Vikings.

Croson didn't anticipate the Vikings' program advancing so rapidly, especially with all-section running back Manuel White Manuel White (born July 2, 1982) is an American football running back. .

``We thought it would take them a few years to get it going,'' Croson said two weeks ago. Surprise. ``(The players) believe in themselves,'' Croson said on Saturday. ``It's an inexperienced team that is beginning to come of age.''

A closer look

Upon closer examination, San Fernando's 33-point loss to El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

wasn't as bad as it appeared. Sure the Tigers were hardly in it, but after the team quit self-destructing via the turnover, the game was fairly even.

It put them in a big hole early, one they could not extricate themselves from.

The loss of Major Caldwell, who sat out much of the second half with an injury, did not help matters.

Caldwell's speed helped him score three first-half touchdowns. The 5-foot-8, 160-pounder scored on runs of 35 and 7 and returned a kickoff 96 yards.

He left shortly after the third quarter began, and the Tigers didn't score again until late in the game.

Speedy recovery

Cleveland quarterback Eddie Whitaker has 877 yards passing on just 38 completions in four games, thanks to a group of fast receivers who average 25 yards per reception.

Receiver Andre McIntosh, who quit after one game last year before placing fourth in the City Section track 100 meter final, has scored on 5 of 8 receptions and is averaging 44 yards.

``Andre can fly,'' coach Joe Santellano said.

Santellano isn't counting out his Cavaliers against 4-0 Granada Hills on Friday.

``We have as much or more talent as them,'' Santellano said. ``If we play well we'll win.''

Big game for Littlerock

Littlerock, 4-0 against modest nonleague competition, has a big test Friday against visiting Capistrano Valley (3-1), a Division I program from the South Coast League, which includes Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:
  • Mater Dei Catholic College, Wagga Wagga
  • Mater Dei College, Western Australia
.

Capistrano Valley, which won the 1990 Division I championship and has made the playoffs six of seven seasons since, is coming off a 21-20 win over Tustin.

``Capistrano Valley is probably going to have to look in the Thomas Guide just to find us, so this game is a chance for us to gain some respect,'' Littlerock assistant coach Tom Hegre said. ``Capistrano Valley is definitely a quality program.''

Eagles soaring

Fourth-year program Lancaster (3-1) - which without seniors last year was winless in the Golden League - has cracked the Daily News Top 10 after beating Muir 28-6.

Lineman Denis Denis, king of Portugal: see Diniz.  Sobalvarro, a member of the Eagles' first senior class, says the best is yet to come.

``We're going to go 5-0 in the Golden League,'' Sobalvarro predicted. ``We've got more size, speed and strength than the other teams.''

Quick Snaps

Inexperience: Eric Zdnek, Chaminade's backup quarterback, hadn't even taken a snap this season when he replaced injured starter Lyle Everett in the second quarter of the Eagles' eventual 22-21 upset over Valencia last week. Zdnek completed 7 of 9 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.

Everett, who landed hard on his right (throwing) shoulder, is expected to start Friday against Temple City.

Hurting: San Fernando, undefeated in its first three games before being blown out by El Camino Real 63-30 last week, is having injury problems. Running back Major Caldwell, quarterback Larry Brown and offensive lineman Steve Nevarez, the Tigers' three top players, all were not at full-strength against ECR ECR Efficient Consumer Response
ECR European Congress of Radiology
ECR Electron Cyclotron Resonance
ECR El Camino Real (Kings Highway; California)
ECR Electronic Cash Register
ECR East Coast Radio (South Africa)
.

Getting better: There's good news offensively at Notre Dame. Quarterback Seth Oseransky was 12 of 18 for 132 yards and running back Darin Barton rushed for 96 yards on 22 carries in the Knights' 14-13 win over Alemany.

``We've made great strides,'' Knights coach Kevin Rooney said.

LEAGUE UPDATES

MARMONTE

If Royal hopes to earn a playoff berth, the Highlanders must start getting plays from quarterbacks Devin Cruz and Jon Palacios. The running game is solid - Steve Sheehan pounded Newbury Park with 158 yards Friday. But with Palacios throwing for just 60 yards and two interceptions, Royal could not keep up in a 30-15 loss. The road gets tougher this week against against Westlake. . . . Wes Cobos has been a revelation at Thousand Oaks. The speedy tailback burned Agoura for 234 yards and a touchdown in a 29-17 win. Notre Dame's Darin Barton is coming on at running back. He had 96 yards on 22 carries in the 14-13 win against Alemany. Two weeks ago he had 116 yards against Saugus. . . . Loyola coach Steve Grayson is impressed by Hart quarterback Kyle Boller, who the Cubs hope to contain Saturday night. ``It looks like he can throw the ball forever,'' Grady said. ``Every time a wide receiver thinks he can outrun out·run

Most defensive ends tip the scales at 200-plus pounds. Yet at Crescenta Valley, the Falcons have found good use in 6-foot-2, 180-pound Tim Crowder at that position.

The senior, who is used as a tight end and an inside receiver on offense, was moved to defense this season because coach Alan Eberhart needed a body. And so far Crowder has fit in nicely.

``He's smart and real tough,'' Eberhart said. ``He sees the plays well and can penetrate, which is what kills opponents. He's always getting in the backfield.''. . . . Glendale coach Pete Smolin is in high spirits Adj. 1. in high spirits - happy and excited and energetic

The Engil

Back by popular demand, the Engil becomes a semi-standing feature for this column. We award Engils to those players who epitomize the tough, old-fashioned style of play epitomized and demanded by the award's namesake, Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman.

Art Garcia, Moorpark: Scores three rushing TDs, catches one TD pass, recovers fumble, has key interception in Muskeeteers' 35-21 come-from-behind victory over Simi Valley. A two-way classic. 4 Engils

Corey Neal, Sylmar: Scores eight TDs, seven by rushing and one on a punt return, against Poly. Has more points in one game than seven area teams have for the season. 3-1/2 Engils

Bobby Hernandez, Van Nuys: Hobbles off bench near end of first half to throw for 133 yards and TD despite twisted knee in 10-0 shutout of Reseda. A mere flesh wound flesh wound
