"We're working with the city and the state to determine what belongs where," Taylor said. "People keep asking us for a date [when the LMDC will dissolve] and all we can say so far is that we're aiming for late fall. It depends on how long it takes to distribute the projects and the grants."

The LMDC was created as a transitional agency in late 2001. According to it's charter, it's objective was to lead planning for the World Trade Center site and downtown revitalization, and to oversee the allocation of more than $2.7 billion in federal funding earmarked for rebuilding initiatives. Feeling that these goals have been accomplished, the agency is looking to close up shop.

According to the LMDC, the City will now be in charge of administering grants to more than 60 downtown cultural initiatives and allocating remaining earmarked funds for projects off the World Trade Center site, including the Fulton Street Corridor and East River Waterfront initiatives.
