LIVING CENTERS OF AMERICA, INC. RECEIVES UNFAVORABLE VERDICT

 HOUSTON, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Living Centers of America (NYSE: LCA), Inc. has been notified of an unfavorable verdict from an Alabama jury regarding a facility belonging to its newly acquired subsidiary, Vari-Care, Inc. The jury rendered the verdict in favor of the plaintiff in the amount of $65 million in a case involving the death of an 83-year old resident.
 Edward L. Kuntz, chairman and chief executive officer of Living Centers of America, Inc. said, "The employees of Living Centers and Vari-Care continually strive to provide quality care for our residents, and we do not believe that the verdict is supported by the facts of the case. We intend to vigorously appeal the jury's findings. Because of the pendency of the case, we cannot comment on the insurance coverage available."
 Living Centers of America, Inc. is the fourth largest provider of long-term health care in the United States . The company operates 242 centers in ten states: Texas, Colorado, Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama, Louisiana, Nebraska, Wyoming, Arizona and Mississippi. Of the 242 centers, 180 provide long-term care and 62 are devoted to the care of people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.
