Part of the money to pay for the project was made available from Gov. Pete Wilson's 1995-96 state budget, which contained approximately a 4 percent increase over last year in spending per pupil and a 2.73 percent cost-of-living increase, the first for schools in five years. The $63,900 to be used was taken from a fund for one-time costs such as catching up with delayed maintenance, or buying textbooks and educational technology, such as computers. The remainder of the funds, about $32,800, will come from district funds budgeted for building and site improvements. Construction will begin once the contract is signed and bonding documents are received. The project is expected to take up to 60 days, while the grass field will take four to five months to be ready for use, said Tom Niekamp, the district's business services director. Work calls for installing a track with concrete curbs, a grass field with sprinkler system, and initially five portable bleachers, Niekamp said. |
