The $96,800 track and soccer field will replace what is now essentially a dirt field in the southwest corner of the campus of about 500 seventh- and eight-graders, officials said.

"This is exciting," said Principal Rosaria Williams. "It will give us additional physical education facilities and an opportunity for students to compete and train. We can also expand physical education into soccer as well."

The Keppel Keppel can refer to several different people, places and concepts: People

  • Augustus Keppel, 1st Viscount Keppel (1725-1786), a British admiral
Union School District board voted unanimously at Thursday's meeting to accept the low bid on the project of $96,800 put forth by Lancaster Lancaster, city, England

 contractor Ilias Meikhail Joha.

Part of the money to pay for the project was made available from Gov. Pete Wilson's 1995-96 state budget, which contained approximately a 4 percent increase over last year in spending per pupil and a 2.73 percent cost-of-living increase, the first for schools in five years.

The $63,900 to be used was taken from a fund for one-time costs such as catching up with delayed maintenance, or buying textbooks and educational technology, such as computers.

The remainder of the funds, about $32,800, will come from district funds budgeted for building and site improvements.

Construction will begin once the contract is signed and bonding documents are received. The project is expected to take up to 60 days, while the grass field will take four to five months to be ready for use, said Tom Niekamp, the district's business services director.

Work calls for installing a track with concrete curbs, a grass field with sprinkler system, and initially five portable bleachers, Niekamp said.
