Odds and ends from around the Valley:

The Granada Hills Little League has to be one of the most innovative and inspiring youth baseball leagues in the country.

The league's 2000 safety manual is now used by almost every Little League program in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , and it decided this year to teach more than baseball to its 350 kids.

At every game this season, $1 bracelets with the inscription ``Never Give Up'' will be sold in dedication to ALS patients. Also, information pamphlets on ALS will be available from team moms and at snack stands.

``We want all the kids in our league and their parents to learn about ALS, and help support the research going on to find a cure,'' said John Weiskopf, vice president of the league.

``It's a natural fit. We're a Little League, and Lou Gehrig, who died of ALS, was one of the greatest big league baseball players of all time.''

Fred Fisher, president of the ALS Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Chapter, said he's excited about enlisting the support of Little League in raising ALS awareness.

``One of our biggest challenges is finding the people with ALS to serve in an area this large,'' Fisher said.

``Having the Granada Hills and Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  little leagues selling our bracelets, and distributing ALS materials at all their games helps tremendously in raising awareness and funds for ALS research.''

It's been nine years since Elinor Wimmer of West Hills promised her family she was going to make it through the painful chemotherapy treatments and beat breast cancer.

Buy yourself some comfortable running shoes for next year, she told her family, because she would still be around to join a few thousand other women making the same promise to their families, and run in the 5K run/walk Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Elinor made good on that promise, and this Sunday she will be stepping to the starting line starting line

for the eighth straight year with seven members of her family, including three grandchildren for the first time.

``They wanted to join me this year, and I'm so proud of them,'' Elinor said. ``They're going to see a lot of women, like their grandma, wearing pink hats that identify them as having cancer.

``They're going to see people wearing paper signs pinned to their race T-shirts that say they're walking in celebration of a cancer survivor, or in memory of someone.

``They're going to see young kids their age walking with their fathers, wearing those signs in memory of their mothers. It's an incredibly emotional day, and an important one.

``I don't want what happened to me to ever happen to my daughters and granddaughters.''

Susan Komen was a mother of two who died of breast cancer in 1980 at age 36. With only a few hundred dollars, Komen's sister, Nancy Goodman Brinker, established the foundation in her sister's memory. Since then it's mushroomed nationally.

The L.A. chapter began holding this race nine years ago at the Rose Bowl, and has raised more than $5 million to underwrite grants to women's cancer clinics in Los Angeles County, and fund cancer support groups and early detection clinics.
