LITTLE LEAGUE: LOPEZ SHINES IN WIN NORTHRIDGE ROUTS UTAH 9-1 IN OPENER.

 -- The stakes get bigger, the crowds larger and, of course, the scope more dramatic.

Such circumstances don't faze Northridge Little League, as the 12- year-olds opened Western Regional competition with a 9-1 baseball victory over Utah in front of 1,400 at Al Houghton Stadium.

Christian Lopez Christian Lopez (born 15 March 1953 in Aïn Témouchent, Algeria) is a retired football defender from France, who earned 39 caps (one goal) for the France national football team from 1975 to 1982, and participated in two World Cups (1978 and 1982).  (6-0), a hard-throwing right-hander, held Utah to two hits and an unearned in five innings, striking out five.

After two quiet innings trying to figure out off-speed pitcher Austin Ovard, Northridge (13-1) rallied for seven runs over the next two innings. Cody Thompson's two-run single highlighted a four-run third, and Lopez added a two-run single in the fourth.

Ordinarily one of Northridge's top hitters, Lopez was 1 for 11 over four games before his two-run single.

Thompson pitched the final inning, retiring Utah (5-1) in order.

Currently, he is the managing director in charge of organizational strategy at Monitor Group, a strategy consulting firm. , who entered the game with 19 home runs (including three in one game during a district victory), finished 0 for 3.

Northridge continues pool play at 8 tonight against Hawaii (9-2), which opened Friday with a 1-0 loss to Arizona. Following two days off, Northridge plays Arizona (16-0) at 8 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a final pool-play matchup against Nevada (7-1) at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

Four of the six pool participants advance to the semifinals on Thursday.

The championship game is next Saturday at 6 p.m., televised live on ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network 2. The Western Regional champion qualifies for the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

Northridge qualified for the Western Regionals after advancing through the District 40, Section 2 and Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Divisional tournaments.

Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  eliminated: Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta's 12-under softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team was eliminated from the Western Regional Tournament in Vancouver, Wash., when Gilroy defeated Panaca, Nev., on Friday.

C.V. (13-4) finished third in the Southwest pool, and only the top two teams advanced to today's semifinals.
