LIST HAILS AREA'S HIGH-TECH GROWTH.

Byline: Ben Sullivan Daily News Staff Writer

Giving testament to the region's growing technological heft, 18 area companies were identified Monday by accounting firm Deloitte & Touche as among the fastest-growing in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

``We do notice in that area there's a cluster,'' said Deloitte & Touche spokeswoman Suzanne Thompson.

While identifying this year's winners, the Big Five accounting firm has not yet ranked the companies. A final list, including rank and percentage growth, will be announced in September, Thompson said. Last year's winners had five-year growth rates Growth Rates

between 280 percent and 7,000 percent, she said.

Though the award has little practical effect on the business of most honorees, it reflects the growing role of technology regionally. It also can serve as a morale booster for employees at firms that don't normally get a lot of public attention, said Fred Deindoerfer, chief executive of Chatsworth-based International Remote Imaging Systems Inc., one of this year's winners. IRIS makes machines that rapidly screen urine samples for disease.

``It's something you take home to your family,'' Deindoerfer said of the honor, ``but regardless, you still have to do your job the next day.''
