LIMITED ANNOUNCEMENT

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Limited, Inc. (NYSE: LTD; LSE) reported net sales for the four-week fiscal period ended Nov. 27, 1993, of $632.9 million, a decrease of 5 percent from sales of $668.7 million for the same period in 1992. Sales of $5.457 billion for the 10 months ended Nov. 27, 1993, increased 5 percent from sales of $5.185 billion for the same period last year.
The November sales report does not include Brylane sales. Had last year's results excluded Brylane, sales would have been flat for the month ended Nov. 27, 1993, and increased 8 percent for the year to date period.
The company's comparable store sales decreased 7 percent for the four weeks ended Nov. 27, 1993, and were flat for the year to date period.
Leslie H. Wexner, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "The 7 percent decline in store-for-store sales in November was due to the continued softness in our women's apparel businesses. This trend continued through the Thanksgiving weekend. Accordingly, although the current retail environment makes it impossible to predict December's performance, it now appears likely that earnings for the year will be down 4 percent to 12 percent compared to last year, to a range of $1.10 to $1.20 per share, or 5.5 percent to 6.0 percent of 1993 sales. We will be clearing slow-moving merchandise, and expect that our inventories will be clean as we enter the Spring season."
Wexner continued, "Unfortunately, the positive results achieved by certain divisions have proven insufficient to overcome our overall sales shortfall. Specifically, Express had a record-breaking Fall season last year, which has proven very difficult to repeat. Limited Stores continues to suffer from an inventory assortment that is unbalanced and lacks sufficient depth in best-selling items. On the other hand, both Lerner New York and Victoria's Secret Stores continue to improve. In addition, I am particularly pleased that Victoria's Secret Catalogue had a double-digit sales gain, and that our newer businesses also produced strong, double-digit store-for-store sales increases and significant profit gains."
Wexner concluded, "We have planned Spring conservatively and, as a result, I am cautiously optimistic that our Spring offerings will meet with broad customer acceptance. "
The Limited, Inc., through Express, Limited Stores, Lerner New York, Lane Bryant, Victoria's Secret, Structure, Limited Too, Abercrombie & Fitch, Henri Bendel, Bath & Body Works, Cacique, and Penhaligon's, presently operates 4,668 specialty stores and distributes apparel nationally through the Victoria's Secret Catalogue.
