LIMERICK UNIT 2 BEGINS REFUELING OUTAGE

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Philadelphia Electric Company (NYSE: PE) said today that Unit 2 at the Limerick Generating Station in Montgomery County, Pa., was taken out of service this morning for a planned, 68-day refueling and maintenance outage.
During the outage, 240 of the unit's 764 fuel bundles will be replaced, 26 plant modifications will be performed, and more than 2,200 maintenance tasks and surveillance tests will be completed.
Some 1,650 workers, including PE and contract personnel, will participate in the outage, which is expected to be completed by mid-April.
In 1992, Limerick Unit 2 established a new world record for the longest continuous run of a nuclear reactor. Since returning from its first refueling outage June 5, 1991, the unit produced electricity uninterrupted for 533 days, until Nov. 20, 1992.
For the entire year, Unit 2 operated at nearly 91 percent of full capacity, generating 8.8 billion kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity. It also achieved the highest availability rating among the nation's boiling water reactors, making it the most reliable nuclear unit for 1992.
The nation's nuclear units routinely undergo maintenance and refueling outages every 18 to 24 months. PECO's nuclear units at Limerick and at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in York County, Pa., recently shifted to 24-month operating cycles.
David Helwig, PECO vice president at Limerick, said the modifications, maintenance, and testing performed during the outage are geared to assure safe, efficient operation of the unit for the next two years.
Helwig said preparation for the outage began last summer. "We have an outstanding outage team here at Limerick. All activities have been thoroughly planned; we are confident the outage will be a success."
The quality of the outage, he said, will be judged by the station's safety record, the outage length, and its cost. "Improved outage performance is one of our key management focus areas," said Helwig.
