The phone outage caused an unspecified number of Verizon customers to lose wireless, land line and high-speed Internet service in a vast region from the Victor Valley to Mono County.

The outage caused intermittent communications problems at the Lancaster sheriff's station Wednesday morning. Lancaster's 911 emergency calls were rerouted to other areas.

Verizon spokesman Jon Davies said he was unable to estimate when the outage would be fixed. He said Southern California Edison had to repair structural damage to the power line before the fiber optic cable could be fixed.

He said wireless customers were affected by the outage because their calls are transmitted from satellite towers to Verizon's fiber optic network, as is the company's DSL DSL
