LIGHT EMITTING DIODES.

Conventional LEDs are custom made low pressure discharge Low pressure discharges are those that have gas pressures from a few millitorr to a little less than atmopheric. They have the benefit of less power requirement of sustenance of the discharge as volume recombination rates are lower.  lamps, containing neon or argon argon (är`gŏn) [Gr.,=inert], gaseous chemical element; symbol Ar; at. no. 18; at. wt. 39.948; m.p. −189.2°C;; b.p. −185.7°C;; density 1.784 grams per liter at STP; valence 0.  gases and emitting a coloured glowing light by means of an electrical discharge Noun 1. electrical discharge - a discharge of electricity

. LED technology has been around for 30 years or so, in digital watches, luminous advertising and computer and hi-fi indicators.

Recent advances in technology have made production of luminous radiation that is perceived by the human eye as white light and that can replace conventional light sources. The advantages of LEDs include a life of over 100 000 hours, no ultraviolet radiation, insignificant heat radiation and glare, and shock resistance.

One of the most innovative uses of LED technology recently is again by Isometrix in the design of front and rear lighting of a prototype car. The Ford 02IC, presented in Tokyo last year, is what the firm calls a 'concept car', designed by Marc Newson Marc Newson (1963-) was born in Sydney, Australia. He is a successful industrial designer who works in aircraft design, product design, furniture design, jewellery, and clothing. He incorporates a design style known as biomorphism to his various designs.  and built at Ghia, Ford's coachworks in Turin.

Conventional car lighting has a number of elements -- headlamps, indicators, brake lights -- in set positions. Newson wanted to blur the boundaries between these positions.

LED technology was seen as the ideal lighting source to produce an even array of light within restricted depth. Isometrix' answer was a single electronically controlled lamp, front and back, to meet all requirements.

The front light includes over 2000 high output white LEDs from Japan, which are the brightest available at the moment. Orange indicator LEDs are interlaced Refers to a display system or image that uses interlacing and does not render contiguous lines one after the other. See interlace and interlaced GIF.  through the panel with an array of fibre-optic points which create headlamps. Fibre optics are fed light from two projectors within the engine compartment.

The rear light incorporates red LEDs distributed over the surface at a set intensity. When the brake is applied the light increases in brightness, depending on brake pressure. Orange indicators work in the same way as in the front light. A moulded lens decorated with the Ford insignia protects each panel. Inside the car, instrument panels are backlit An LCD screen that has its own light source from the back of the screen, making the background brighter and characters appear sharper.  with white LEDs which also illuminate a circular lens for eye ball Speedo An earlier scalable font technology from Bitstream Inc., Cambridge, MA (www.bitstream.com).
